Did We Miss the AI Domain Gold Rush?

For the past few years, AI has been the hottest keyword in domaining. Thousands of investors rushed to register anything with “AI” in it - from strong one-word names to some very questionable long-tail domains.

But now that we're in 2026, the market feels very different from the early hype phase.

Back in 2023 - 2024, almost every week we saw new AI startups launching, and many domain investors believed AI domains would become the new .com goldmine.

Fast forward to today, and I’m seeing a few interesting shifts.

The Easy Opportunities Are Mostly Gone

Most of the obvious AI combinations are already taken:
  • One-word + AI
  • Two-word tech combos
  • Strong brandables
New investors entering the space now often end up registering very long or weak combinations, which may never get real demand.

This makes me wonder if the “easy money” phase is over.

Startups Don’t Always Want “AI” in Their Brand

Another interesting trend:
Many AI companies today don’t include AI in their brand name at all.

Examples we see across the tech world:
  • abstract brandable names
  • invented words
  • short memorable names
Sometimes they only mention AI in their product description, not the domain itself.

This raises a big question for domain investors:

Will keyword + AI domains remain valuable long-term, or will brandables dominate?

The Real Demand Might Shift to “AI Infrastructure”

Instead of generic AI names, the next wave might be around specific AI sectors, such as:

• AI agents
• robotics AI
• AI security
• AI data infrastructure
• industry-specific AI (medical, legal, finance)

Domains targeting real problems and industries might outperform generic ones like:

“BestAIPlatform”
“UltimateAITool”
etc.

Renewal Pressure Is Coming

Another thing many investors don’t talk about:

A huge number of AI domains registered in 2023–2024 will soon hit renewal cycles.

If those names didn’t sell, we may see:
  • big portfolio drops
  • better domains returning to availability
  • a market correction
That could create a second opportunity wave.

My Personal Strategy Right Now

Instead of buying dozens of random AI names, I'm focusing on:

✔ fewer domains
✔ stronger keywords
✔ industry-focused AI terms
✔ brandable potential

Quality feels more important than ever.

Curious to hear from the NamePros community

• Are you still actively buying AI domains in 2026?
• Have your AI domains sold well, or mostly sitting?
• What AI keywords do you think still have real demand?
• Do you think AI domains will age like crypto domains did, or become long-term assets?

AI is clearly transforming the world…

But the real question for domain investors is:

Are AI domains still an opportunity - or are we already in the late stage of the trend?

It's about the same as the best .com domains now.

There's still opportunity, but it's not easy.

Good .AI domains are not only expensive to buy, the carrying costs are expensive.

Wholesale cost is going up to $80/year, so retail at many registrars will be around $100.

True. The early easy wins are gone, but strong names and creative branding still create opportunities. It just takes more strategy now.
