Dicks acquired sports authority domain names.
In the future, when you forget that Sports Authority went out of business and type in their website address, you’ll end up on a page owned by the defunct retailer’s biggest competitor.
Dick’s Sporting Goods reportedly scooped up the Sports Authority name, including its domain names [such as SportsAuthority.com] and customer mailing lists, for $15 million in the company’s intellectual property auction.

Dick's biggest competitor died and the way to keep it's biggest competitor dead is to buy the brand and the domain names and shelve the entire brand. 15 million is a drop in the bucket to shelve a competitor. They spent another 8 million buying out the leases of 31 of the most profitable stores that they plan to rebrand to Dicks.

There is no way in hell Dick's would want to switch over to Sports Authority branding. Who in their right mind would want to be associated with a totally outdated brand. Dick's is an experience type store and Sports Authority is an outdated shopping market that hasn't been updated since 1987. If they would have invested in a good branding agency and their online presence they would be the market leader right now but unfortunately old school mentality killed the brand.
