I am into domaining for about 2 years. Made a number of good sales but as time passes I am realizing that I am better off developing my portfolio rather than selling them.

So GUYS, tell me what skills and how much money do I need to develop a domain and convert it into a profitable website. I want to give it a go. For my first project I am setting my budget as $250 for the development and the domain I have selected is Science - Blog . com. Also let me know which tools to buy and which to avoid, if you have any ideas regarding the development please let me know. I have worked on Wordpress and OsCommerce before but I am not a professional developer. I want you people to cover all the basics to develop profitable website.

250 enough maybe 25 enough, but you can't earn from a Science - Blog website. I like science ,but I looked to .edu websites at the past and if you are not a proffesor , your knowledge is zero for me...

I have also some real-estate domain names and I can go with them. But what I need are the first steps of developing a domain into profitable website.

If you're looking to develop multiple domains - go down the minisite route.. but do it properly.

Get a good, custom design, use HTML/PHP, get high quality content written (10 pages minimum) and make sure its SEO optimised. You can do this for $200-250. Design should be $50, same for coding and content. SEO will be about $100 to outsource properly - but of course if you have the knowledge you can do one (or more) of these yourself.

First make a simple website, and learn search engine reactions (My advice is make lot of website, more than 100) You need good domains and wait few months, then you need real estate expert partner, then put everyday a new article, when your total articles 50, put a link (A microsoft link) and again wait ...and put all things..

You will not need anything for first months, full website or blank , because search engines will f*** your website/s no doubt there...First months your websites positon everyday can change (up,down,up )

Hi PickPk

If you are thinking about developing site, and you don't know much about HTML/php i would recommend trying wordpress or joomla. Its free, and its not that scary as it looks(specially joomla),and its very powerful.I guarantee that you will make much better looking site, even professional using this tools then you would with Dreamweaver. It will swallow your budget, and your site will be amateur at best.
And if you already have a budget,my suggestion is spend it on article writers. Its hard to start website about something you don't like, and update regularly. So you can find professional to write some of your articles, you can do a research and write some too,and in no time you will have a good looking, content reach website.
Also pay attention on SEO but don't throw away money to programs and Adwords etc.Try to make interesting relevant video and upload to Youtube.Spend at least 30 minutes promoting your site on forums and other community places.30 minutes/site means you can run 10 websites at the same time and still have time for other things(if this is your full time job of course).
Hope it helps,good luck

"I have worked on Wordpress and OsCommerce before but I am not a professional developer"

That's good enough. Shared hosting, less than $10 a month. SEO you can do yourself, that's free. The only thing I spend money on sometimes is a logo/graphic work, theme. But you can start out with a free theme, just use text for a logo. Then if your site starts to make a little money, take some of that and reinvest into the site, better theme, logo etc. And with 1 shared hosting account for under $10, you can have many sites under that. If you get some serious traffic, you might need better hosting but most people don't. So it's not that much.

"Science - Blog . com"

I'm not sure you're picking the right one to go with, since scienceblog.com is a live site already. That's more an informational type site, doesn't make as much as sites that have something to sell, unless you can tie it to scientific instruments/related products, some good money in that.

With that budget you will have to design your minisites. Thus the first thing should be to study very well webdesign.
