Developing a sub-domain like us.com

I have a Web site on the “us.com” domain. I started development on it during the early part of July 2007. I’ve seen a variety of opinions about this subdomain but I’m not at all concerned about a few extra characters in the domain name. Since I’m focused on business only in the US I would rather own a short name on us.com than some long convoluted hyphenated name just to make it TLD. I realize that domain collectors have a different perspective.

If given a choice most people will buy stuff from companies within their own country. After all, if you own a great domain name like Pharmacy.com it probably doesn’t mean much in Chinese or Russian. Perhaps this why, when you advertise on Yahoo or Google, they ask you to select a market such as United States and Canada, Germany, India, etc.

The thing that strikes me as strange is that the search engines do not seem to see my “us.com” site. Is there some rule that only TLDs get a visit from search engine robots? It’s like there is some filtering going on whether you want it or not. Anyone experience this?

I don’t want to mention my site’s name or specific products because I’m not looking for free advertising, but I can still give you a current example. I have a computer for sale - let’s call it XYZ. It has been offered on my site for 2 weeks. It will beat any price on Ebay and I think it’s the lowest price on the Web. But if you google for XYZ computer your search doesn’t even find it. I’m not talking about placement. I would not care if was on page 50. I’m just saying if you use a search engine to perform a search for an existing Web site, and the site isn’t found at all then maybe there are special issues with sub-domains.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Based on what I see when visiting US.COM, I would start by getting your own domain name. You'll just be spinning your wheels until then. IMO.

i think .us.com sucks. better to have .us or .tv or .info or something of that nature.

Prior to buying the us.com domain I did a fair amount of research and came across comments like yours. But it didn’t change my mind because it didn’t provide any facts. I’m well aware of the “.web.com” debacle, but that was a different owner. Have you ever owned a us.com or other subdomain? What is your opinion based on?

You don't own it. That's the point.

Interesting comment, but again, facts please.
If I don’t own the domain I bought who does?

Go ahead and develop it. Don't come here and ask a question then get all defensive. People are just giving you their opinions. You know what they say about opinions...they are like crappy domains, everybody has them.

If your site is a success and you can change popular opinion, perhaps I will renew some of the .us.com domains I regged when I was a dumb n00b

Untimately, the person who owns the domain www.US.com

Hey PokerPie - So, you are calling anyone who registers the us.com a dumb n00b. I think you’re ignorant. Don’t tell people not to come here and ask questions. That is what forums are for. Asking for facts is not being defensive. If people say something sucks and they don’t provide a reason, that is useless. I am sorry to hear that you were a “dumb n00b.” I guess that explains why I wasn’t exactly amazed by your brilliant reply. Oh... like you said, don’t get all defensive.

then get a .us

Yes, I am calling you a dumb n00b. Study domains for a few months and you will agree with me. Or I can ignore you or tell you what you want to hear. Just trying to help you and anybody else who might read this avoid the mistakes I made.

I think many n00b's reg a bunch of stuff in .me, .asia, .us.com and all the other crap extensions. Some of them, like me, then realize they were dumb, admit it to themselves, and improve. Some, like you, go into denial and insult everybody who tells them that they are dumb.

The only way you are ever going to get better and improve is to admit to yourself that you do and will make mistakes, learn from them, and move on.

Regging .us.com's is dumb and a waste of money. This is my opinion and pretty close to fact. If you think I'm wrong please show me some successful examples of developed .us.com domains and also some sales of .us.com domains to domainers or even end users. I doubt you will find many at all. That is because they have little value. I doubt there is ANY us.com domain that gets natural type in traffic of any volume whatsoever. That is the ultimate test of a domains value. Unfortunately for you with .us.com you cannot even profit from the greater fool because nobody is dumb enough to pay money in the aftermarket for those domains, not even the dumbest of the dumb

Exactly.

It is extremely hard to sell domains of any .extension
trying to sell a SUBDOMAIN like Crappy.us.com or even EXCELLENT.us.com
is Impossible. Unless of course you find some-one even more of a DUMB noob than yourself.

You have no control over the long-term or even short-term usage of .us.com
If the present owner of US.com decided to sell the domain, the new owner could/would instantly turn off all the subdomains in an INSTANT.

You do not OWN the US.com Subdomains, you only have a non-guaranteed license to use.

The same comments apply to all the related domains. AU.com, uk.com and all the other two letter Pseudo Country-Domains.

If you are SO desperate to use a Sub-Domain to obtain hard to get Keyword phrases, why not register and setup some of your own.
Example
Finance.CrappyName.com
Loan.CrappyName.com

Just as useful and a LOT CHEAPER.

With a subdomain you're building up pagerank, backlinks, and SE traffic for someone else's website (in this case US.com). What happens if US.com gets sold to someone else who decides they don't like the subdomain business model and want to develop US.com into a top notch geo?

It's not worth the risk in my opinion to build a business on. Of course it's your time and money and nobody can make that decision except you.

You should run (not walk) away from US.COM. The entire US.COM business model is designed to take advantage of people just like you. Unlike those shysters, the people here are actually trying to help.

I would suggest for you to target for a .us domain. Thats the official domain for USA and your site will be more influential for US traffic.
Sure blaablaa.us.com has the .us extension but google still sees it as a .com domain and you don't have any advantage at all for US traffic. If you want you can PM me your domain site and I'll see how does it rank on search engine.

mmm college.us.com seems to do very nicely....check it out on Alexa but anyhow they are now being sold by networksolutions, enom etc and I get plenty of offers on the few I bought years ago...try site:.*.uk.com and site:.*.us.com for many thousands of other sites. I regged property.uk.com
and am always getting tons of offers. I have sold many names at good prices
so the idea they can't be resold is also rubbish both sedo and afternic list them....but I'm not here to defend them just to correct some of the clear nonsense written by the people who also "lease" .coms.

quality I think you are also a bit delusional with your .web.com's. Maybe you do get some buyers but I remember you quoted me something like xxx, xxx+ for one of your names. with .web.com there are probably more potential 'greater fool's' but in my view, they are fools to pay much over reg fee (or anything at all) for a .<anything>.com.

the difference between 'leasing' a .com and a .<blah>.com is that icann strictly regulates what can be done with the .com. nobody regulates what can be done with .us.com other than the owner of us.com. while i think icann are a bunch of money grubbing wheazles i trust them more than some nameless faceless owner of a random .com.

it is like the differnce between building your business on land you have a 99 year lease on versus land you have a month to month lease on.

I thought all the *.web.com subdomains were lost when web.com was sold. How do you still have yours? Do you still have yours?

Every subdomain.us.com will show exactly the same alexa. Because the alexa it shows will be for us.com, ditto with subd.web.com and web.com

What the essential difference is that domain.us.com is actually a subdomain and not a domain name per se.

A lot of tlds of the type .us.com .uk.com .de.com etc or even .firm.in .gen.in .ind.in are all subdomains, not domains.

Not correct try college.us.com and then try www.bmw.us.com they do not have the same rank in alexa.
