Hi everyone.

Just interested to hear if anyone has had any experience of software you can buy for drop catching. With drop catchers all allowing multiple back orders and then going to auction, it makes sense to buy the software if it works ? The cost is around $200 which is a good investment if it catches a few good domains. Maybe it's worth buying a few different software packages to stand a better chance of catching a good domain ?

Any thoughts please ?

Best,
Paul

I am Zsolt from DesktopCatcher/AutoBackorder. Although we have commented it many times, it seems we can't stop rumors that our software will stop working and at the same time we will charge everyone for everything... So these statements are not true. We are also not stealing domains, I don't know how it is concluded from a whois record. We don't force past users to move to monthly subscription but all new users are required to pay monthly fee. The reason is simple: it is impossible to develop and maintain a software for one time fee.

What you can expect in the future:

We think there is only one way forward - making DesktopCatcher stronger. So instead of adding random APIs, we are building an exclusive dropcatching API for DesktopCatcher that will be able to compete against some smaller backorder services. It can be expected around this winter. To be able to to that, we need registrar accreditation on our own. We are already registrar for many extensions and we will extend that list.

So this will be a very big step for DesktopCatcher, maybe we will call it DesktopCatcher 2, not decided yet. But we expect that this will be a huge boost for our software and significant increase in catch rate.

So I was trying to get a domain and this morning I see this for the Whois:

Registrar WHOIS Server: whois.desktopcatcher.com
Updated Date: 2020-05-09T08:42:56.0Z
Creation Date: 2020-05-09T00:31:14.0Z
Registry Expiry Date: 2021-05-09T23:59:59.0Z
Registrar: Virtua Drug Ltd
Registrar IANA ID:

Did they steal my domain? Are they a registrar now? I don't see them in the ICANN list

The domains where you see such pattern in Whois are backordered via AutoBackorder. There are some extra registrars there, including our own accreditation (most ccTLDs don't require ICANN). Since we call the registry directly, it will always beat the desktop software for these domains.

Will those of us who bought the lifetime license be upgraded to the new software automatically?

Has someone been trying this service.. ? I mean the website version, not the desktop version ?
How do you think are the results in comparison to the desktop version ?

PS : I have a lifetime license but I rarely use it, coz it cant really catch anything even a little competitive.
But it is great instead of regging by hand.

@Zsolt Bikadi Has there been any progress in the cloud version since you were here the last time ?

Are you using dynadot API?

I have a lifetime license too.

Have been using it for years.

I don't think it matters which version you use.

You will only catch second rate domains because Dropcatch

and the other big guys will beat you every single time.

I run threads from Dyna/dot, Name/silo and more during each session

and it does not make a difference at all.

You will never, ever, ever catch the best names with this software.

I should point out, it is not a failing of the software itself,

but that the big guns have much, much better systems and software

which you can't compete with using Desktop Catcher.

Also, the registrars used in the software limit you a lot,

which really makes it difficult to catch even the second rate

names sometimes. Every time I use it the registrar's API's slow down,

or even freeze the software off and on while you are trying to catch names.

Knowing what I know now, I would probably just stick to

using one of the dropcatching services instead.

Appreciate the input @Cdomains , however I have been aware of its limitations. As I said I only use because it is indeed faster then handregs. May be I did not ask it right but my question was is the cloud-version any better than the desktop one ? ... as the operator claims below.

I think that in your quote Zsolt is talking about autobackorder.com and not about cloud version of desktopcatcher.com,i think that what is he trying to say is that since autobackorder.com is accredited registrar with some cctlds like .bz , .pw , .nl etc,he can send calls directly to registry,he doesnt use APIs for those cctlds so he can beat desktop softwares with autobackorder.com,if you have desktopcatcher software you can also register with autobackorder.com and take a look how it works

By cloud version I mean the website autobackorder.com itself. I registered and have been trying since but I find their performance equally poor. I mean it can only reg domains which no one went after. That is what DC desktop version does anyway. You are right about the couple of other extensions they may directly send the query for but they are pretty obscure and I am not sure if they are any good for flipping.

I recently started to use desktop checker software. I bought it at a discount and I found it very helpful to use.

That moment you ask yourself, if I created a money making tool, why do I need to get subscribers to use it so I can make money ..

The thing is that we are not the original creator of DesktopCatcher, it was built by @FPForum. We were users of the software and loved it - this is why we bought it and also we want to take it to the next level.

The next level means to build an API that can compete (in some extent) against dropcatching services. We just got ICANN accredited yesterday and start building an exclusive API for DesktopCatcher (and AutoBackorder). Once finished and added to Desktopcatcher, it will drastically improve the catch rate (for the implemented TLDs).

Good to hear. What sort of timeframe are you looking at?

So 4 years ago I posted that this software stands no chance in catching a domain that a registrar is after but it could be good to catch things that others might be trying to catch using some api from dyna, ns etc. I was attacked 4 years ago for saying this.

Just curious if anyone in the past 4 years has any proof (what I asked then) that a known name that registrars where after got caught by this? Its a rhetorical question, I just like how people attacked me back then and nobody did the right thing to do and stand up and speak some truth on this matter.

Whoever is the new owner, I urge you to not engage in deception, the software has its place, but the prior owner made posts that were very misleading in my opinion.

PS on any given day there are 10+ names many people are after (you can see it from the NJ list etc). Not once is it caught by some random guy. Its mostly DC/SN maybe some other registrar (rare) but never by someone we don't recognize.

We will start with a smaller set of extensions to test everything, I hope we can do this in 2 months.

Yes, the software is basically for beating handcatchers and API users (at least at the moment), it is absolutely a valid opinion. So if I were here that time, I would defend your standpoint. Thus, most of the successful users use it for non-com domains, where backorders can be much more expensive than the reg fee or there is no backorder service at all.

Although sometimes we got emails that the domain was ordered on Namejet, Park.io etc and it was caught by DesktopCatcher, it is a rare and unexpected situation. This will change somewhat in the future with our API designed for DesktopCatcher.
