DesktopCatcher software

Hi everyone.

Just interested to hear if anyone has had any experience of software you can buy for drop catching. With drop catchers all allowing multiple back orders and then going to auction, it makes sense to buy the software if it works ? The cost is around $200 which is a good investment if it catches a few good domains. Maybe it's worth buying a few different software packages to stand a better chance of catching a good domain ?

Any thoughts please ?

Best,
Paul

I have missed several to same buyer as well, very annoying. Can you tell if xz.com has in house backorder? It looks like they do, you have to be logged in to place it though, so I can't tell the price.

ETA: yes found the backorder site, somewhat in English http://www.kqw.com/domain/delete
still can't figure out cost

@FPForum sent you a PM : smile :

@JRayers - Thanks for questions! Regarding your first, this isn't a bug. It actually happens because there are a number of responses coming back and trying to post into the log at the same time. Although the requests are being sent with the full domain, if you have 2 responses trying to post in the log at the same time part of one may dip down into the other. This won't have any effect on the request itself or the domain being sent, though.

Regarding your second question, XZ appears to be connected to MAFF who owns a number of different registrars. The backorder service behind that would most likely be DomainMonster's backorder service since that's also owned by MAFF. Keep in mind, their backorder service is just like Name.com in that they don't do auctions. Instead, each domain is limited to one backorder max. You can read more here: http://www.domainmonster.com/backorder/

@usernamex - I've replied to your PM :)

Hey Nat. This would mean the software was unable to establish a connection to DynaDot's server. It would only come from two things, either a temporary drop in your internet or a DynaDot's server being temporarily unavailable. If you were seeing responses coming back from other registrars at the same time then it was likely on DynaDot's end and not yours. Hope this helps :)

DesktopCatcher is awesome and fun. @FPForum provides phenomenal customer support. It is so good, I almost didn't want to write anything about it to keep the competition down!

There is some effort in getting reseller accounts setup initially, but the guidelines are clear and complete
http://www.desktopcatcher.com/category/program-help/
And I chose to get more accounts to increase my odds, not required

Now if only I had unlimited funding . . .

phenomenal customer support

I agree. Always goes out of his way to help you. He will answer all your questions and give you all the help you need, but you wouldn't know it by looking at this thread because he gives awesome support via PM.

The software is really good, but the competition is quite fierce for the good names, so don't expect to catch the really awesome names with this software.

This is not the fault of the software, just an indication of how competitive it is for really good names.

Thanks for the kind words @Cdomains and @usernamex! I try to be as helpful as possible :)

As Cdomains has mentioned, I wouldn't advise people to chase 4L.com's (or even 4L.net chips) these days as that type of stuff won't be catchable outside of backorders. But, there is still plenty of goodies out there to grab and a number of users made a hefty profit last year when they were grabbing 4L.net chips at reg fee and then flipping them for low-mid $XXX within just a couple of months. The same has happened with 3L.in, 4N.co, and 3L.co domains as well. Depending what you're looking for (short domains, SEO domains, brandable domains, keyword domains..etc) - There are still plenty of great opportunities out there and it shouldn't be too hard to make your investment back.

I confirm: support is just incredible. Assuming i'm not the only Andrew's client that asking a lot of questions, i wonder how he finds time to these expanded answers and still has time to develop the soft and also of course for his own business. Wonderful!

Hello,
Been looking at this for quite a while, and keep sitting on the fence, does connection speed from your computer have a great influence on catch rate?
Regards
Simon

Assuming that you're connection is high speed (such as Cable) then you should be fine. Dial up and satellite connections would definitely be slower. Along with that, many registrars require that you add the IP address of the machine you'll be connecting to the API from. So, if your IP changes frequently this could also be an issue. If your connection is slow or your IP changes frequently you might want to consider running it from a small Windows VPS instead. These can run about $10-$15/month.

Will I have a chance at LLLL.com domains if I run multiple copies of the program? I'm not talking about premium LLLL domains like milk.com. A bottom of the barrel, CCCC domain like kvjw.com. Any chances?

@Nat Hunt
care to elaborate? How low are the chances? Suppose I ran 20 copies of the program at once on 10 registrars each.

I can't speak to those specifics but maybe @FPForum can. I am a big fan of the software by the way -- I use it everyday, but for much lower competition names.

I use 1 copy of the software with 2 NameSilo and 1-2 DynaDot hookups.

@McMull500 - Many of the bigger backorder outlets have continuously setup more and more registrars under them, making it harder to compete with them even if you had 10 copies running. Although you might think a crappy LLLL.com is bottom of the barrel, it's still going to get dozens of backorder requests when dropping and it will still bring in more than the software costs in auction. The big backorder outlets like NameJet and DropCatch have extremely large setups going and that's why they will always have such big success when it comes to the high demand domains. Trust me though, getting a setup going like that is not going to be cheap..

@Nat Hunt and a number of other members have had great success catching the lower competitive names which have easily paid for their investment. Myself and a number of others were really having success during the Chinese boom. I can say a number of members paid registration fee for 6N.com (chips and non-chips), LLLL.net (chips and non-chips), LLL.in (chips and non-chips), LLL.co (chips and non-chips), NNNN.co (chips and non-chips) and many others late last year, and made huge profits off them!

Even if you operate several registrars your chances going against larger drop catchers is slim. I think BackorderZone is still up for sale.

Would this software catches .in tld domain name? If so, which registrar it supports for .in tld? Also, my ip address changes frequently. would that hamper .in domain catching?
