I'm investigating getting a dedicated server in order provide web hosting. I would like to be able to offer both windows and linux hosting. I heard about VPS (Virtual Private Servers) but don't fully understand. Can you install a different opperating system on the each VPS? Basically can I run a windows and linux from the same server?

The next question, will Plesk or Ensim work for selling wb hosting, or is it only for one site? Do they support reseller accounts?

All help would be appreciated.

Okay lets start with your first question.

VPS is basically just a server cut up into very secure partions. Each with root access and it acts like a normal dedicated server. The HD, Processor, RAM is all cut up into partions as well. Each VPS can have a different OS. If you wish to start up a hosting co my best beat would be to buy a linux server or vps. Like in are selection we have shown you in your other thread and buy a Windows reseller since Windows isn't a popular choice in the hsoting world a reseller would work fine. Plesk will work with Windows but it won't do well in Linux cPanel is best of Linux.

The main reason I would be looking at getting a windows server is that one of my clients runs some software that will only run in a windows environment. They need to run a .exe file from a cgi bin.

So you're also saying that with VPS, if I had a server with 3Ghz Processor and 1gig Ram, and I partitiioned it into three, each VPS would have 1Ghz Processor and 333MB of RAM? Or does it work more like sharing, that if one server needs more resources, it uses all it needs until the next one needs some more?

It would split it up into 1Ghz Processor/33MB Ram..

But it would probley take away some ram and processing power.. for the main server.. Probley 900Mhz/300MB Ram or so.
