Sale to data recovery firm is biggest of the year.

ESS Data Recovery has purchased the domain name DataRecovery.com for $1.7 million, according to a company press release.

The sale marks the biggest reported sale of the year and shows the promise of a targeted, generic domain name.

The seller is competitor Associated Computers, Inc. of Minnesota. Historical Whois records at DomainTools show that the domain was transferred between January 10, 2008 and February 2, 2008.

A quote in the company’s release shows that the company understands the value of a quality domain name:

“Our existing customers know that we’re a leader in the extremely competitive data recovery industry because we provide a better service than our competition. It’s fitting to have a domain name that reflects that,” said Ben Carmitchel, the company’s president. “Both existing and new clients will benefit from easily finding our website when checking on the status of their case, researching information about data recovery, or referring us to a friend.”

It is unclear if this was an all cash transaction, and if any of Associated Computer’s customers or products were included in the transaction.

That is great news!

Yeah data-recovery is a multi-million dollar industry... getting data off a crashed or corrupted disk/tape can cost thousands, and people are willing to pay it to get back their valuable data... and they would want to get it done by somebody reliable... and somebody with a name like datarecovery.com immediately builds confidence...

Funny thing is, if people had recent backups, there wouldn't be a need for data recovery...

I have looked into data recovery a bit recently while doing some research for a website on the topic of backup at backup.info

Not sure if the domain would get much type-in traffic, my guesstimate would about 40 per day.

On adwords, "data recovery" has a high average CPC...
https://adwords.google.com/select/TrafficEstimatorSandbox
Probably in the top 50 highest paying keywords...
Lets say average $15 per click.

$15 x 40 visitors x 365 days = $219000

So, the domain could potentially pay itself off in less than 9 years.

The article above was the original post from last night...I talked to the buyer and updated the story, which you should find interesting. Here's the link. http://domainnamewire.com/2008/02/29/datarecoverycom-sells-for-17-million/

Wow, nice article and a great name/sale !

"The company used to spend $10,000-$12,000 a month on pay-per-click, but found it difficult to get a good return. The Google Adwords Traffic Estimator Tool has an estimated $13.83 - $20.74 per click to be in positions 1-3 for the term “data recovery”, with a total cost of $3,820 - $7,210 per day."

It's an end user sale. The organisation deals with data recovery. It's a wise investment to add the name along with it's business.
