I agree.. totally sucks IMO for visual appeal.. most won't pronounce it as Cool until it's been heavily branded..

I didn't even realize it was supposed to be pronounced "cool" until I heard someone say it. Pretty bad choice of domains.

Not my cup of tea...

I don't like the look of it. It's very dark and not easy to use like Google. Google is simple and fast.

Sure, as long as you have the millions to promote and have a 'cuil' domain to use!

I find it hard on my eyes (it gives them eyestrain). The seach result pages load much slower than Google search result pages. Also, I don't like the quality of the search results as much as I like Google's or Yahoo's. The domain name seems like a lousy choice for a $33M venture as well. That's my constructive feedback for the moment.

I don't like the initial black search page. But I'm sure that'll be changed.

Just searched for my name. I wonder why am I getting pics of cute girls for a
few links going to my blog, and I didn't even write about them?

Completely agree Bill.

I'm shocked a venture-backed tech startup in this day and age couldn't come up with something that'd pass the radio test with $33M... Do some people still live in caves? Should have bought Cool.com... :imho:

So, what's in a name?

Nothing really!

If you had never heard of google and it wasn't the largest search engine on the planet, you would all say it was worth reg fee or nothing in the appraisal section.

cuil looks cool :imho:

Besides, Google needs their asses handed to them by some real competition. :kickass:

Cuil on the run?

Hello friends!

I saw today (after a research in biz news), that the new internet search engine CUIL is on the run. It has been launched a few days ago and has the potential to overrun Google. Insiders said, that it will be the biggest search engine in the world...

The background:

A start-up led by former star Google engineers on Sunday unveiled a new Web search service that aims to outdo the Internet search leader in size, but faces an uphill battle changing Web surfing habits.

Cuil Inc (pronounced "cool") is offering a new search service at http://www.cuil.com that the company claims can index, faster and more cheaply, a far larger portion of the Web than Google, which boasts the largest online index.

More about that topic could be read here: http://www.newsdaily.com/stories/n27419392-internet-search/

I think there is potential also in available domains according to Cuil. I've already catched some (six or seven) good ones. So be fast, there is money on the run. %%-

Any other oppinions to this topic would be great!

Edit:

Oops, I haven't seen that there is already a topic about this in industry news... Sorry, but maybe we can discuss about name oportunites here...

Strange, how this is getting so much media. New search engines are created all the time.
Their marketing people should get a fat bonus!

A lot of people here believe that Cuil was a poor name choice. I'm inclined to
agree, I mean I keep wanting to pronounce it quill. As pointed out in this thread,
the public won't know how to spell it when they first hear it. In the early stages
this can work against the company. However, and this is where it could get
interesting, if they can successfully brand it so people know how to spell it
and pronounce it 'cool' they will have a name that's very commonly used. Just
think of all the times you hear people say cool, as an expression or in describing
the weather. Promotion will make the public aware of the search site and hearing
the word in everyday conversation will remind them of it.
For me personally, now that I know about it, how to spell it is not an issue.
I for one will certainly keep an eye on it and see how this new search engine
develops.

Checked it out, somehow it's crawed all the old search results... also the picture grabbing is so inaccurate. I think it needs much more improvements before anyone will use it.

Just because it's better (I don't believe it is) doesn't mean it will compete or overtake Google.

If you ask me, Ask.com has the most powerful and fully-featured search, but I still use Google.
