Blockchain domains aren't meant to work the same as what you are defining as a "real domain."

I dont see ICANN or the DNS being an issue. The .crypto extension will be first and foremost on the decentralized web. All of the major browsers that are working on Web3.0 will pick up .crypto as default for the decentralized web....in my opinion.

You’re pushing the fact that these are untouchable once they’re in someone’s “custody”. What happens in the case of TM infringement?

Go to that site and click on the north arrow for any of those .zil domains. Those are websites published into IPFS and viewed through Pinata.cloud. I have clicked on some, but not all. I did not come across anything that I shouldn't see. Currently, they are primarily simple Hello World websites. Personally, I will be playing around with website building...just to see what its like and learn the possibilities. I won't be putting anything up that cannot be put on any other extension.
Next year should be an interesting year with UD where they will be developing tools for users.

Oh, forgot to mention... yes, you are correct. Browser support will need to come in the future. Currently, extensions can be added to browsers to view websites. But the browser will need to work with UD to get integrated. I think this would be the most logical step...and be huge.

@Keith, they don’t care about trademark. I asked what happens when a site host child porn or sell human organ, and all I get is “we can’t do anything” and first-amendment bullshit. If whitewashing the dark Web is your thing, then they will be happy to take your $$$

We're running a sunrise period just like what a traditional TLD would do. We built an (expansive) list of trademarks as well as common use brand terms and blocked them so they can't be purchased until December 31st, 2020. There's more than 1M domains blocked. Brand owners can come and claim them during that period. If the brand shows TM ownership or common use, we give the domain to the brand for free. More than 1,000 brands claim including several Fortune 500 companies. There's also a process to report a domain that's being used in a way that violates a trademark. That list of 'bad domains' is on the blockchain so apps can show warnings like 'potential phishing site' or just not show the site at all.

This is something we've been running for the past several months. You submit a request with proof of ownership - either the TM proof or control of key properties if it's a common use term (.com website, social media accounts). We're taking an expansive view of what can count for claiming to onboard as many companies as possible.

Regarding the trademark process... I would agree that companies with brandable names like Google, Microsoft, Sony, etc should be able to claim their trademarks. However, I do not agree that companies which use generic words like apple, jaguar, amazon should automatically be granted those names.

Those are common words and are not considered TMs
