Im looking to get a credit card and so far I am thinking of getting one from American Express [possibly the American Express Clear Card]. Can someone help me out? I was wondering if American Express is a good company?

Go with Visa. Its accepted everywhere. Besides you pretty much have to be rich to get an AmericanExpress.

If I get for emergency purposes only and I dont use it within the first three months or so after getting my card will I have to pay anything?

usually credit card comes with an annual fee but first you need to be approved based on your annual income, and comes like from 2.49% to 3.49$% for every purchase.
mastercard is the best for me based on experience.

* Pay over time or pay in full.
* Grace Period for purchases is 28-31 days, if the previous balance shown on each billing statement is paid in full by each respective due date.

* 0.00% Intro APR for 12 months on purchases made with the Card.
* For Balance Transfers, APR is 5.99% for the life of the balance (for balance transfer requests submitted on this application).

You gotta have some nice credit to get a card like that.

If you dont have any credit get a department store card. i.e. Macys, JCPennys, or Dillards. Build your credit this way for about 6 months then try for a visa or mastercard.
Paying on a loan can also help you build credit. (this is how i did it. Then i got department cards and then eventually a major credit card.)
Chooses wisely and dont spend money on them unless you have or you are trying to build credit. Trust Me!

I'd go with Visa or M/C as they are accepted more because merchants don't get whacked as high with fees as with AMEX
