One of my very close friends (there are 4 total) has become quite ill.

His doctor had in come in right away as my friend is very tough and for him to be contacting a doctor for a 'cold' does not happen. They did the deep nasal swab and he is waiting for the results.

The reason I share this is because he was told by a doctor observing the clinic yesterday (the observer does work for CDC in Atlanta) that there is another virus...not Covid 19, not the seasonal flu...that is surging in the US right now...not even named yet.

To be candid, had this particular person not told me this, I would be skeptical...but this person is one of the few I would trust to guard my back. If anyone else is hearing something similar in your area, please post it here.

Hope this turns out to be a just a variation of Covid-19.

    Sorry @Mister Funsky

I removed post because I doubt the new virus has anything to do with your friends illness as there are no reports that it has jumped to humans.

I hope your friend recovers soon.

Thanks Craig for the info...here is part of it as it appeared on Nov 8...

Scientists have discovered a new type of virus, similar to the strain that causes Covid-19, in the dung of cave-dwelling bats in Japan. This was reported by Japanese television, which published data from a group of researchers from the University of Tokyo.

The group investigated in detail the gene of a virus contained in the droppings of little horseshoe bats collected in a cave in Japan seven years ago and found that the gene is 81.5% consistent with the coronavirus Covid-19. It means that the coronavirus similar to Covid-19 was found.

Study: MMR vaccine could protect against COVID-19

The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine has been theorized to provide protection against COVID-19. In a new study published in mBio, an open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology researchers provide further proof of this theory.

Researches have shown, in new study published in mBio, that mumps IgG titers, or levels of IgG antibody, are inversely correlated with severity in recovered COVID-19 patients previously vaccinated with the MMR II vaccine produced by Merck. MMR II contains the Edmonston strain of measles, the Jeryl Lynn (B-level) strain of mumps, and the Wistar RA 27/3 strain of rubella.

Pfizer to request emergency FDA approval for its COVID-19 vaccine

    https://nypost.com/2020/11/20/pfizer-to-request-emergency-fda-approval-for-its-covid-19-vaccine/

The feds plan to ship “millions of doses of vaccine within 24 hours of FDA approval,” Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said at a Thursday briefing where he revealed Pfizer and BioNTech’s plans to seek emergency approval.

I know the above is kind-of old news, but the part about shipping within 24 hours caught my attention. This is a major logistics challenge...I've got no doubt our military can handle it efficiently.

I appreciate your posting the article (and the well wishes) as I had not seen it yet...my friend said that the doctor told him that a great degree of the recent spikes in positive Covid 19 could be associated with the 'new' virus. Of course it could be a mutation that shows positive on one test and negative on another. I will update on the thread once I hear from him regarding results. I don't want to bother him now but if I am not mistaken they gave him two different types of test from two different manufacturers.

Covid-19 mink variants discovered in humans in seven countries

Seven countries are now reporting mink-related Sars-CoV-2 mutations in humans, according to new scientific analysis.

The mutations are identified as Covid-19 mink variants as they have repeatedly been found in mink and now in humans as well.

Uncertainty around the implications of the discovery of a Covid-19 mink variant in humans led Denmark, the world’s largest mink fur producer, to launch a nationwide cull earlier this month.

So I guess the big question now will be... do the current new vaccinations protect against these new strains?

The key is in the spike protein of the virus. Current vaccines work on replicating the spike protein of covid-19.
If this virus spike protein mutates substantially, then there could be a problem.
But for the moment, covid-19 hasn't mutated substantially. It just has some different strains, but without any big mutation difference.
If it gets to mutate as the seasonal coronavirus species (there are 4 known different seasonal coronaviruses) then it would require different vaccines.

Seasonal coronavirus protective immunity is short-lasting

    https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-1083-1

"To date, there is limited evidence of reinfection by SARS-CoV-2, although it is generally assumed that reinfections by coronaviruses occur. To prepare for future waves of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), it is important to elucidate the duration of protection to reinfection for which the seasonal coronaviruses might serve as an informative model. There are four species of seasonal coronaviruses—HCoV-NL63, HCoV-229E, HCoV-OC43 and HCoV-HKU1—that all can cause respiratory tract infections but are otherwise genetically and biologically dissimilar. They belong to two distinct taxonomic genera and use different receptor molecules with varying host cell tropism1."

China’s ‘bat woman’ virologist rules out Covid-19 virus in fresh tests on old cave samples

Fresh tests of blood samples taken eight years ago from a group of miners who became sick after working in bat caves in southwest China show that none of them were infected with
    the coronavirus that causes Covid-19
    .
Chinese virologist Shi Zhengli, known as China’s “bat woman” for her extensive research on coronaviruses in the mammals, released the details in an update published this week in the scientific journal Nature, expanding on a paper released in February.

In the update, Shi said her team recently retested the samples taken from the miners and confirmed that they were not infected with Sars-CoV-2.

The update also details how she and her team found the bat coronavirus – known as RaTG13 – in 2012.

    Thanks for that update.

I was a bit sceptical about the link I posted earlier today (and quickly removed) from the television station in Japan, as it read like typical attention grabbing traffic-bait.

Good to know it has been confirmed that there is no link.

Just to clarify, seasonal coronaviruses are the responsible of the common cold.
Covid-19 is another type of coronavirus, but very different from the ones causing common cold, that's for sure.

Thanks for the update. It might also be manufactured to debuke the standard/erroneous theory of origin from her Lab and subsequent release in a Wuhan wet market. It is clear that we have at least two crises at hand - an outbreak of Coronavirus and the viral spread of misinformation. Here is a channel that I have recently tuned into: Prognosis Daily Edition. (current link tuned into fighting the misinformation crisis - other programs available)

Toronto, Canada's largest city, put into lockdown as infections soar

(CNN)Toronto, Canada's largest city, was placed into lockdown for 28 days on Friday, with officials shutting shops, businesses and restaurants and banning indoor gatherings to curb a growing spike in Covid-19 cases.

More than 1,400 new coronavirus cases were reported in Ontario on Friday, taking the province's total case since the start of the pandemic beyond 100,000. The region has been battling a rapidly rising rate of infections, with Toronto particularly badly hit; the city broke its record for new infections on Tuesday and has reported several hundred new cases each day this week.

Hence the reason I decided yesterday it was better to remain isolated in the North, since flying through Toronto would have required mandatory self-isolation, subsequent Covid tests and the possibility of contracting Covid en-route. I don't need that stress in my life when I take a so-called vacation.

F.D.A. Grants Emergency Authorization of Antibody Treatment Given to Trump

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/21/health/regeneron-covid-antibodies-trump.html

"The treatment, made by the biotech company Regeneron, is a cocktail of two powerful antibodies that have shown promise for people who get it early in the course of the disease."

"The treatment, made by the biotech company Regeneron, is a cocktail of two powerful antibodies that have shown promise in early studies at keeping the infection in check, reducing medical visits in patients who get the drug early in the course of their disease. A similar treatment, made by Eli Lilly, was given emergency approval earlier this month."

U.S. records over 12 million cases of coronavirus

    https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/u-s-records-over-12-million-cases-coronavirus-n1248511

The rise has prompted governors to renew mask mandates and limits on social gatherings.

"The United States topped 12 million cases of Covid-19 on Saturday, as the third wave's uncontrolled spread prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to urge Americans not to travel for Thanksgiving."

"The country recorded more than 200,000 coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 12,002,863, according to NBC News' tally. The total number of deaths is 255,567."

"Right now, cases and hospitalizations are skyrocketing in the Midwest and across the country. As the weather gets colder and more people head inside, it will get worse. It is more important than ever that we double down on mask-wearing and physical distancing to help more people get through the winter and protect those on the front lines of this crisis — our doctors, nurses, grocery store workers and truck drivers," they wrote.

The governors went on to urge people to stay home for Thanksgiving.

"If you are planning to spend Thanksgiving with people outside your household, we urge you to reconsider," they said. "As hard as it will be to not see them this Thanksgiving, imagine how much harder it would be if their chairs are empty next year."

I just found this old post from J Sokol, and the warning that "... the coronavirus death toll could double to 300,000 deaths by the end of the year, if the country doesn't change its trajectory" now looks like being an underestimation.
