ccTLD Country specific TLD and SEO implications

Does a country specific TLD, for example .it* for Italy result in automatic SEO benefits from a search generated in italy?

Will widgets.it appear before widgets.com if someone is searching for widgets, both sites have same seo programs implemented (backlinks etc) and the search originates from Italy?

It definitely does for localized search results. For example many people in canada use google.ca and choose "results from canada". Then sites ending in .ca will be ranked higher.

Same goes for .it

So if your business mainly caters to Italians, it may actually be better to get a .it
