Content is King?

Hey all,

Really looking for some feedback here on a couple ideas.

I am sitting on a huge database of articles on a wide range of topics. Too many for me to use for my own use. So I thought I would maybe try getting into the content selling arena.

Just curious though. I have always supplied my own content but was wondering what others do for content. Would this sort of online store interest anyone?

Has anybody here gone and tried this? Would love to hear some success stories as well as some horror stories on what to watch out for.

Looking to be a real budget place and thinking around 5 bucks an article for like a 400 to 600 word article.

What do you all think? Too much? Too little?

Just doing the research now but hope to be selling articles VERY soon!

All replies and remarks are welcome.

Many factors go into the value of an article(s). Just to name a few:

Is the content exclusive? If not, how often will it be published?

Are the articles filled with "keywords"?

What is the subject matter of the articles?

How about providing a few examples?

:imho: if you can create an oriiginal article, that's well and good but if you only buy so-called private label articles which are already published on 200+ or more article directories with different authors and resource boxes, i think it's the same thing with other site's category, it's called a copy-cat, google will only penalize that site and if so happened that you're the 201'st to published that article, then it seems like your site is a clone of 200 sites?

Yep, just what Rob said, the more exclusive and filled with keywords the better.

Thank you

Generally the more useful and interesting content the more successful it will be. It depends on a lot of factors like, are the articles exclusive, is it descriptive content, no. of keywords in the article, specific appeal to your target audience etc.

Content only doesn't matters.

If this was the way then I would have made a script for my email account in which I recieve 1500 spam emails everyday. :D

and that would be 1500 new pages of content each day :D

You could always invite article publishers to join for free, do something a bit like
istock except with articles. Have memberships, publishers receive a percentage
when one of their articles is sold. Have stats on listed articles to show how much
saturation/downloads each one has had... just some ideas.

well there is a big difference between content and a load of rubbish text. Try it, through up a site with loads of random stuff you wont rank for anything in google or yahoo, might do ok in msn tho :yell:

i would only pay for an article if its was 100% exclusive, but i would be willing to pay $10

instead of (or in addition to) starting yet another article distribution website, why not provide a service that brings together content producers (freelance writers) and content consumers (webmasters) ... and then take a cut .. something like a 10% fee. The content would be original and custom written exactly to keyword specifications.

If you already happen to have a mountain of pre-written content, as you mention, it would be easy to kickstart this service as an addon......and then gradually turn it into the main element of the site. This way your content mountain would continue to fund you with PPC revenue, not to mention the thousands of webpages that would be indexed in google, which would draw visitors to your site. And then, offer these visitors two options: either buy pre-written content for cheap, or pay a bit more for original content.

your only non-trivial effort would be in attracting quality content writers.... but that's not all that tough...
