My First Year in Domaining:

A year ago, I stepped into the world of digital asset investing, specifically domain names. The idea came from my friend who first introduced me to this industry. It’s been a wild ride with ups and downs, but I’ve learned so much along the way.

The Start of My Journey

I made my first domain sale in July 2024, just six months after buying my first domain. At that time, my portfolio had about 80 domain names, and I was thrilled to receive a $5,880 sale. Two weeks later, I sold another domain for $2,000, and just four days before that, I had received a $3,000 offer—which I turned down.

July was a game-changer for me, making me realize the true potential of domaining. Since then, I’ve focused on growing my portfolio with better-quality names. While I haven’t had another big sale like my first two, I did receive eight leads on Afternic, resulting in sales of $480 and $250.

Portfolio Growth

Over the past year, I’ve invested around $9,000 to grow my portfolio to 350 domains. However, I plan to drop about 80 names because, as a beginner, I made some mistakes—some names have little value, and others may have trademark issues. Despite this, I’m happy with my progress, especially considering that I’m balancing domaining with family life as a father of three.

I mostly avoid auctions since top-tier names often sell for inflated prices, but I’m satisfied with the quality of domains I’ve built so far.

Marketplace Experience: Afternic vs. Atom

Right now, 90% of my portfolio consists of .com domains, but I plan to explore other valuable extensions. I’ve listed my domains mainly on Afternic, but I really like Atom, which I believe is the best marketplace right now.

However, Atom needs better marketing exposure. I tested it for three months with 250 domains and tracked visitor data. At first, I was getting 200+ views per day, but over time, this dropped to 100 views per day and kept decreasing. Because of this, I switched my landers back to Afternic.

Afternic is great for making sales—it gets a lot of traffic and has a strong sales system. But their customer support and AI-based trademark checks can be frustrating. Some of my domains were rejected because their system wrongly flagged them for trademark issues. After multiple emails and proof, they finally approved them. But it was clear that they rely too much on AI instead of manually reviewing cases.

Key Takeaways from My First Year in Domaining

• Patience and Budget Matter
– One great name is better than 50 bad ones.

• Auction Prices Are Overinflated – Many domains go for way more than they’re worth, so I rarely participate.

• Right Pricing & Quality Domains Are Key – These are the best ways to actually close sales.
