Concerning Having Great Content

I've learned that having fresh content on your site in a regular basis can significantly help your site get more visitors. Based on your own experience, how does that having great content on your site help as far as search engine optimization is concerned?

The biggest draw of producing regular, unique & interesting content is that people not only want to come back to your site again and again, but they also want to link their friends & family to the content, whether that be via word of mouth or social media. There's no doubt that Google attributes value to the 'freshness' of a website but you'll find that if you're creating the right content, you'll be increasing your longtail organic traffic anyway.

No, having new content every day, unique content, does not mean visitors will come!
It's a hoax spread via forums that all you need to do is get unique content and your site/blog will be overrun with visitors.
It does NOT happen that way!

You still need to promote your site/blog.
And if you only rely on google, search engines, for traffic?
