.com's dominance is unquestionable however those two articles prove nothing.

You love nTLD's I know. I think it's pretty noteworthy how quickly the company switched back to the .COM. Smart marketers and decision makers will look at this as a case study moving forward and make similar decisions.

In humanity news...

WorldStarHipHop recently sent around a camera man and asked people simple questions:

Spell 12th.
how many letters are in the alphabet?
how many states are there?
What's heavier; a pound of cotton or a pound of stone?

A lot of people got these questions wrong... this is the general knowledge base of humanity.

...and you expect people to remember corp.google or personalinjury.lawyer?

Most UX/UE designers know that they have to make their website so simple that even a child can navigate it.

Starting off with a complicated domain is bad form; and this company just set the bar.

Again, I think that's pretty notable.

Way to start some debate on this forum! lol... Although some others may come in and try to debate whether companies truly prefer COM over everything else, I would have to agree with you.The only time I don't think companies prefer .COM is when they're in countries that have a large ccTLD base - like UK or DE.

I love every TLD there is as long as I can make money on it I'm not emotionally attached to any extension and I don't need to talk for anyone of them either :)

But I'm not ignorant, I don't claim that every company in the world wants a .com.

Who said anything about remembering most traffic go through Google anyway. guidetofindmyselfaroundnewyork.com ain't easy to remember either. This company who switched back had the wrong side of the dot anyway to make sense.

Every company wants a .COM; the question is are they willing to pay for their .COM if owned by another business. Not every business is willing to do that. So it becomes a question of 'can you afford it,' rather than asking, 'do you want it?'

It's a good thing that companies are making websites for ferrets then. :)

Maybe in America, in the rest of the world no there is no such rule. In some countries but all, no way.

Agree, so far only registries sell gtld's to end users.

Personally, I only see that companies want either their .com or their local cctld. I don't see any big upswell in companies wanting any of the thousands of the ntld's. Most of these ngtld domains are being purchased by domainers/speculators, who will tire of these domains, over time, when they've lost their shirts. Of course there will always be exceptions to any statement of fact. But why do you think a lot of the most successful domainers have acquired, these registries? It's to make money, pure and simple.

I agree that most companies will want the .com, but what if it is already active and not for sale.

Like if your company is called Giant Home

gianthome.com - active and taken
giant-home.com - active and taken

In that situation I think the company will look to a popular cctld (not necessarily local) like .tv, .co or .me.

They usually just go with another .com. There was an earlier thread where we (me) went thru some of the stats. Before all these new ones came along, it was, if you can't get the .com, go with .net. Which they still can do by the way. And if you look at top this or that, Alexa or Top 500 Internet Merchants, it's still dominated by .com, you don't find many .nets at all. It was even surprising to me. And there is a very good reason for that.

And this thread will get even longer. This is just the beginning of companies that are making bad decisions now, some of them will finally get it and we can highlight them here.

I don't think most companies looking for a domain have even heard of .tv .co or .me. I think, as JB Lions says, they go for an alternative .com (I know I do). Most of these domainers/speculators in the ntld's are going to lose their shirts. Of course there will always be exceptions.

I don't even know how anyone could speculate at 35 bucks a pop on renewals. It's probably a price that "brandable" speculators cannot survive.

I love all TLDs, but .COM will always be the king of type-in traffic....

I have read nothing but .com is king and always will be. But this is coming from the guys in 1996 who bought the heck out of the 2,3,4 character and dictionary names. The millionaires of .com. I will say this. People like Rick Schwartz are taking domains to a new level. Leasing, getting loans etc.. He and others are making valuable contributions to the industry. But I am a newbie so that is just my opinion and from what I have read over the past couple years.

Dot Com is king. Always has been. People know dot Com more then any other extension. Heck even people in this industry don't even know every gtld.
