I've been wondering this for a while.

If I develop Canadian content on a .com domain, am I losing page rank or search ranking to simililar content on .ca domains?

Or to put it another way, if I develop the same Canada themed website I have on my .com but place it on a .ca domain, will it be more effective at targeting Canadian traffic?

I currently have a few .com "mini sites" that target Canadians. I wonder if I'm missing opportunity by not building them on a .ca domain.

Any insight and reasoning is very appreciated.

Assuming you have the same domain in .com and .ca - I'd recommend building on the .com, unless its a local leads generation site or something.

The idea is the .com will rank globally, .ca will rank higher in google.ca

So unless you're only looking for local traffic (dentist in vancouver) v/s global traffic (dentists everywhere) then developing the .com makes more sense.

.ca domains do indeed rank higher for localized search results. So if you're target audience is mainly canadians, it might be a better idea to register a ca domain for your primary domain.
