Colombia's .CO Domain Extension will launch in 2010

Written by Chief Editor , Friday, 18 April 2008

So what's in store for the Colombia's .CO ccTLD extension over the next few years?

Colombia's telecommunications ministry has confirmed that Colombia's namespace will get a new registry next year, moving away from the current registry run by the Los Andes University.

Under this new management it also promises a full relaunch with the following "tentative launch agenda":
# May - August 2008: Drafting of .CO launch procedure rules
# August - November 2008: Contracts to be finalized and signed
# April - July 2009: Transfer and redelegation procedures begin
# February - May 2010: .CO opens to registrations

I guess that the .co extension's success or failure will depend mostly on its price and registration rules.

I mean some people thought that .tm domains could be relatively successful. But with a price tag of $150 per year and a 10-year registration requirement, most domainers and businesses have looked elsewhere.

Actually, .co domain registrations are currently limited to people living in Colombia.

I've found that piece of information on Wikipedia :

"Around the year 2000 when many country-code domains were being remarketed as worldwide generic domains, there was some talk of allowing second-level registrations in .co for registrants worldwide in order to capitalize on the similarity of this name to .com. However, a Court order prohibited Andes University from doing so."

.co could become the poor mans dot com, it sounds short for "company" so businesses could go for it, especially by 2010 when it will be even more difficult for companies looking for a good .com.

Are you sure the trailing m is not missing ?
AFAIK .co is at 3rd level only.

It seems indeed that .co is at 3rd level only now, but was it always the case in the past ?

Either there's a mistake (m missing) on both Namebio and DNSaleprice, or 2nd level registrations were allowed for a short period of time in the past (most sales are in 2006). This could be due to a mistake from Sedo too, I'm not sure.

Anyway I'm very surprised how high these domain sales were and those could definitely be .com prices.

Would anybody have more information about this ?

I doubt they are .com prices, some of those domains would get a lot more.
