Today I recieved an email from someone who is interested in purchasing colelee.com for a client of thiers. I've no idea what to ask and was wondering what you guys might think? I'm sure it's a problem that all of us who have domains for sale have... don't want to ask so much it scares them away, but don't want to give it away either.

Thanks for your help!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

If you are not sure like you say and are asking for views, I would make it so this thread is not picked up via google etc so that you can ... ask without eyes

If I owned it I would ask for $1K and say that I am open to offers.

If they are so eager, ask for fair value, plus a eager prem., Basically you can write the highest offer to date was $2K a few years back, but you are open to offers as you don't have time to develop the domain right now.

Is the return email a generic or corporate email? You'd want to know who you are doing business with before proceeding.

How do I ask without eyes?

How do I ask without eyes?

mask the domain in your header (ask a mod to do it) so that search engines can't pick up the domain name and this appraisal thread for it; do it something like cole_lee (.) com so we know what it is but the SE's don't.

As for the sale, try find out a little more about who the buyer is, if it is a person named Cole Lee, etc, and ask what their budget 'range' is, what the use is for, and see if it's an amount you're happy with. Start from there.

You'll have to PM one of them as they don't read every post. Try Mellowmasher who posted in your thread above, she is a mod here, though not for the appraisals section. Spade is a mod for this section...

It looks like a personal name, and i would be pretty sure it's the name of the potential buyer. Then it's really difficult to appraise this domain, if the buyer is REALLY eager to acquire that, he could even pay low $x,xxx. It depends by the nature of the enquiry, why is he going to acquire (even buying) the .com of his name through a professional broker?

One way to proceed could be asking them to make a reasonable offer, maybe telling them you have some kind of emotional relationship to the domain and then you would like to consider the chance to sell that for the right price.

Just my non-expert suggestion.

I have had a similar dilemma in the past.

I offered to license the name for an annual fee, this works well if you don't particularly need to sell.

I now rent the domain for $500 per year also with an option for them to have first refusal if I ever need to sell

Thanks everyone for your advice. I've heard back from the interested party and I'm afraid they are in the category of those who don't understanding that good domain names are worth much more then the original registration fee.

I explained it's like when someone bought a home in California in the 70s for 50,000 which, today is worth 750,000.00. That domain names are the real estate of the internet, with different values depending on a number of various factors. I offered to sell colelee for a very reasonable lower XXX but he said his client would only be interested in paying 50.00.

I do believe it's worth what I asked, so I explained why and I'll leave it at that.

Thanks again everyone.

it looks like a 2 1/2 year old domain with .net .org .info .biz .us available. The person representing his/her client problally really believes it being worth mid xx Sometimes the "rep" is more a problem then the client. See if you can talk to the client directly i know a long shot, My domainer instincts tells me it might be a long time before you get another offer on this, good luck

No way to find the client I'm afraid. There is 68,000 + referrences to cole lee (72,000 to colelee) on Google so I think it's worth hanging onto for 8.00/yr.

Good call, stand your ground, $50 is not worth the trouble of dealing with end user transfer, payment fees etc, it has many personal name options, and could be a vanity buy. They will come back with higher.

oh i agree a $50 sale blows, Especially when there a middle man rep dude probally getting good developement money.

would be interesting if it was able to take out of 68k all the instants of:

1. A persons middle name is cole last name was lee

2 Reported reversed, meaning first name Lee last name Cole rewitten on the net as Cole, Lee

(these two caese are real, we just dont how much.)

If you think about that for a while and that you can easly hold this 3 years waiting for a contact let alone a sale, it can really beworth your while to try to get them to bump it closer to $100

The 68K search was of "cole lee". The parenthesis should have knocked off any Lee, Cole, but probably not where middle name is cole and last is Lee, but I'm betting there's not many of them out there. So I'm thinking that nearly most the 68K is for Cole Lee, either as a 1st name/middle name or 1st name/last name.

Then there's the millions of results for Cole (95,000,000). Let's say that 2\3 of those searched has Cole is a last name. That would still leave around 31,000,000 where Cole is the 1st name, and since Lee is one of the top 6 boy middle names, it's a good bet that nearly 1/6 of those have middle name Lee.

That leaves about 5,000,000 Cole Lees and all I need is one who wants their own name as a domain and/or their email address. It's just figuring out how to find that one. Of course, if we all knew how to find those buyers, we'd all be quite rich! ;)

Thanks everyone!

Oh, I don't know, figuring as how there's an estimated 400,000,000 English Speaking people in the world, and the popularity of the names Cole and Lee, I can dream that there might be 5,000,000 Cole Lee's in the world, give or take a few hundred thousand. Of course, it might be more like 500,000 but I really only need one of them willign to put up 250.00 and I'll be happy!

They've not written back so I think they want it on the cheap. I'll hang onto it, keeping it in trust for another Cole Lee.
