Interview on Bitcoin.com YouTube channel with Bobby Ong Co-founder of CoinGecko.com explains process of domain selection. Basically they wanted an animal / mascot in the domain name and the only decent COIN + animal combo they could find available (reg fee) was CoinGecko. So once again another startup in the tech space that does not care much about the domain. Yes, they did choose .COM and perhaps they could have regged a better animal in .XYZ or .TOP but the point is end users don't naturally migrate towards aftermarket domains - despite the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses they will incur over the first several years of their startup expansion.
