Hi all,

Anyone have any experience with .co.za domains? Found a nice one available so thought I would take a risk on it. Some nice sales recently in this ccTLD.

Your views and opinions on .co.za please?

Regards,
Dave

I have been adding a few to the portfolio but I have yet to make a sale.
The market is there but I heard that buyers are not paying top dollar for domains.

Those high 5 and 6 figure sales that are reported: they are ALL fake! The guy has a habit of doing this. :D Whois is updated, and the domain is developed: in the same way all the others that he apparently sold. haha

It appears that there are loads of "good" keywords available. Truth is, it's probably not relevant to the South African people. Many financial, product keywords are completely different and those have bought up long ago-they hardly ever drop.

A really, really good keyword will get you $10-15k at most.
If you have a good relevant keyword, or very popular slang terms those will get you not more than mid-high $x,xxx!! In South Africa, the end-users with money go for keywords, but more also slang terms which can be used in media (we are a multi-cultural country, so there is usually a very popular word from a language that is used by speakers of different languages for emphasis :D). You hear these words on TV, in newspapers, etc. All these are gone. Only locals are holding them and are being bought up by local companies. I have a few. The search volume for these are zilch. So google keyword tool is useless for co.za.

I sold a slang term towards the end of last year for $x,xxx, and this year I sold keywords in the $xxx-low $x,xxx range to end-users. This is where itโ€™s at-and I have some pretty tight names that make sense in .co.za and I am not expecting the world. Which I why also concentrate on .co.uk and other extensions.

I have a couple of triple premium LLL.co.za but no one โ€˜s interested in them. Funny how the premium letter thing doesnโ€™t always apply to .co.za domains. โ€œKโ€, โ€œjโ€, โ€œVโ€ are not bad letters at all.

End-users in SA donโ€™t think US Dollars, they think ZAR. A USD is expensive for the majority of the people. And the only end-users are South African. Typically, if end-users want a domain, they will pick up the phone and call. I am also this way-itโ€™s probably a local preference. This happens quite a bit. So being a local is an advantage. The telephone numbers which I use in whois are all premium with many repeating numbers-so locals usually take me serious first time. :D

Very informative post. .ZA is a semi-strong market IMO but all the good names were taken a long long time ago.
