This could truly be a big competitor to .COM (especially being a "typo").
I would say with proper guidance .CO could REALLY have a bright future!

In other words, is treehugger.co better than treehugger.org? I see ello just launched with a .co and is gaining popularity 35000 requests per hour to be a part of their social network...that's almost half million people per day!

The .org is better than the .co for a non-profit. Apart from .co being the Columbian ccTLD, it has a niche as an alternative to .com, and .co is shortform for company, whereas .com is shortform for commercial. Some startups like .co because most .coms are already taken up, by users or domainers.
