Just ticked over 5 years of active domain name investing and started creating some charts in my portfolio tool to see how things are tracking. Overall pretty happy with the results with all the right numbers trending in the right direction.

Average buy price right now is $30 and average sale price $6485. (I keep saying I want to focus on higher level names but I can't avoid slopping around in the trenches :xf.laugh: ). No big breakouts just slow consistent progress with sales doubling every time I double my portfolio.

Goal this year is to focus on higher level names :xf.cool: and crack the $50k sale barrier.

Congrats Tully on the 5-year milestone — that’s solid progress. Those averages and steady trends speak for themselves. Slow, consistent growth is hard to argue with.

Wishing you success cracking that $50k sale this year.

Great work, Kyle. What's your STR?

Great work, Kyle. What's your STR?

It’s about 0.9% at the moment.

Could easily push that a lot higher by dropping prices (almost half my names are priced over $5k) but I’m happy with slower sales at higher prices with a longer term outlook.

Nicely done. Still can't believe you sold that closeout name for 4 figures. I never find much there.

I’ve had at least 1 $25k sale each of the past 3 years, all hand reg or closeout purchases! I think my best was $9 to $30k.

There are gems out there if you know your niche and can spot opportunities. Narrow and deep better than wide and shallow.

what r your 5fig sales?

it's not really common from reg or cheap closeout to 5fig

I think it’s more common than you think. Still a small percentage overall, but far from uncommon.

E.g. My STR on these names might only be 0.2-0.3% but if you have 800 names priced in this bracket targeted at the right buyers then you’ll likely sell one or two a year.

Whereas the guys buying for $3k and selling for $25k might have a 2-3% STR and everyone buying in that range is pricing that high. But fewer buying closeouts price up there so you see less of them.

IMO.

I’ve shared some of these sales in small groups but not interested in opening the floodgates because if my $30 purchases become $100+ the numbers stop working.

true.. but... there is probably very little to none connection between the unique names.u bought for 30... sold 5fig.

in other words every sale and name is unique.

remember u r not going to closeouts and putting a filter for:
names uptown 30us
that will sell for 5fig

but it's your sales to share
or not

I'm good either way

Congratulations, well done! Can you please add your direct costs (buy+renew) to the chart?

Unfortunately I don't have good tracking for renewal costs on individual names as I haven't (yet) been tracking that accurately (i started but then everything got messed up when taking advantage of transfer promos etc) but it's something I'm working on.

Instead I've been tracking overall yearly spend/sales, first year I basically broke even and since then I hover around 200-300% ROI each year while roughly doubling the portfolio each year.

Doing some back of napkin math if sales continue on the same trajectory and I stopped buying names and just paid renewals on the current portfolio ROI would be around 400-500%.

Lot's of credit for sharing your journey!

Is this approximately your portfolio size?

Thanks. I’m around 2500 names right now.
Nice! Did you know that if you move 1k of those to NamePros landers, that you would qualify for a large portfolio holder badge on your profile?

I think @alcy recently got theirs doing that... (Looking good Alcy)
