I was wondering whether or not there have been celebrity domains sold on Sedo or any other marketplace. I recently regged two celebrity names in the .co.uk extension. Adwords Keytool shows exact matches in the UK for one of them at 22,200 and the other 49,500.

I've seen all the many arguments about UDRP and yada-yada, but I know others are holding celebrity names as well. Any chance of selling these on Sedo?

of course you can sell those on sedo, and I'm sure there will be buyers if those are popular, though registering celebrity names in the first place is bad, you shouldn't have done it...

I have a friend who has sold a few celebrity domains over the years, but I agree with other reply's-be careful...

If a domain can be sold on BIDO, where the domains are set to auction using human intervention, it can be sold at automated SEDO as well.

copyright will always bite you if the site is a success and why buy domain under any other scenario?

Of course you can sell it, though in my opinion the direct name usage seems unethical. But otherwise you will get good value for it if the name is in demand.

i second may comments about the 'direct name usage seems unethical'.
however, isnt that what commonly happens in the domain industry? every keyword makes the domain more valuable. sedo will be the place you want to sell it, although there is always a risk of copyrigh and brand protection.

Doesn't it depend on the name being trademarked or not?

Yup. And if the celebrity will make selling his/her domain name-sake an issue.

Mileage varies.

So if you register it for they do that, you should be ok ?

I have about 50-100 celebrity/band names, but I had problems only with two: a famous writer and a dead musician. I got letters from their lawyers :)

Like I said, mileage varies. There's enough cases to go on where some were held liable, others weren't.

It depends who you're potentially dealing with, really. You could register a celebrity's name sake to make a non-commercial fan site, but...I suppose that defeats the purpose of grabbing it if the intent was to make money off it somehow.

Well, always make sure to deal with such celebrity domains. You never know when you get sued.
