Do Canadians use .com. net . org or do they prefer .ca over the rest?

I'm Canadian and I don't really have a preference.
and since I missed out on the .com's, if I can
get the .ca then bonus :)

But I have seen an increased amount of TV advertising
of .ca recently, and also .org is getting more and more
popular with charities/non-profit associations.

.ca is the Canadian .com, eh.
However, .com is still king...

i always try for .com first (i'm canadian also)

but sometimes you just can't get the .com, and the .ca is a very good 2nd option IMHO

example: www.linkpopularity.ca (mine)

i would think i was a little late, and a few bucks short (LOL) to get the .com

Mixed bag really - all four extensions are used. Companies targeting international markets prefer the .com extension. Companies targeting solely Canadian markets often use .ca. .ca is also used by some owners of .com domains to deliver customized Canadian content. Best example is google.ca.

agree with that. :)

i regged a domain for a buddy the other day, and he said WHY are we getting the .com, when we're canadian, and the .ca is available. :)

we grabbed the .com, but would have regged the .ca in an instant.

We like our .com's but are use to seeing and using .ca's as well. I think there is no problem using a .ca if cash is an issue.

good luck, Gary.

I think Peter has pretty much nailed the current situation.

I checked the creation dates of a couple ca/com pairs in response to a similar inquiry on another board. Interesting results.

.CA is like backpacking around the globe with a Canadian flag on your pack.

I really love the .ca and use it quite often but the .com is still king. I also see the .org being used in Canada but not so much the .tv just yet.

if one is targeting canadian shoppers the advantage of having a .ca is that it has inherently more trust built in from a canadian online shopper perspective. Part of the reason is obviously it tells canadian shoppers that there won't be any surprises associated with cross-border Duty, Brokerage Charges. Plus if you are selling something that people associate with being canadadian than i would argue .ca is as good as .com if not better choice sometime since it leaks authenticity. For example since about 85% of the worlds maple syrup comes from canada, and canada has a maple leaf on its flag. If you were a company that wanted to import Maple Syrup , what would your feelings be about
MapleSyrup.ca vs MapleSyrup.com vs MapleSyrup.net, ?

I guess it all depends whether you want to hide the fact that your company/ branch is located in canada or not.

You have to be Canadian resident to register a .ca though.

Oh,

its so nice to have Canadian neighbors. Can a name be transferred to a person who is not a Canadian? Trade some of my gift cards at the Bellis Fair Mall for a .ca, lol

Same requirements for transfer as for registration.
You don't wanna have to deal with the exchange rate anyway.
