Can you please tell me if this is viable?

I recently inherited some money from my father, and I'm looking to get back into the domain industry again. Maybe even develop an associate amazon site. Can you truthfully tell me if there is still money to be made with domain names, or am I likely to lose my shirt?

It depends.

Without knowledge and experience, a large amount of money is just a shortcut to lose money quickly.

If it is a decent amount of money I might dabble, but at the same time put money in more liquid dividend yielding investments.

The question is not really whether or not one can make money (spoiler: yes!); the real question is whether or not it's the best way FOR YOU to make money. And that question only you can answer.

Hire a reputable broker to advise you.

Hi, hope you're doing ok (y)
If you’re renting the roof over your head, and it’s a decent enough amount of money to buy a house, buy a house.

As per my opinion Yes there is still money to be made in domains but Just remember the golden rule buy good domains and be patient. If you start hand registering hundreds of random names, then yes… the industry will gladly accept your donation 😊

theirs always high yield savings at 4 - 5% interest annually compounded monthly. Real estate is a good investment, cds while you decide, blue chip stocks, even art before you invest in domains. GL. :)

Yes, there is a lot of money to be made. Yes, you will lose your shirt.

Read threads like this one to understand the experience of new investors. Most new investors will lose money and get caught up in thinking that they just need to buy more domains and wait more time before they will make money. The difference between starting out with $1,000 and starting out with $100,000 is that the person who starts out with $1,000 will only lose $1,000 whereas the person who starts with $100,000 will lose $100,000.

If you want to start, forget about the money you have access to, start out with $1,000 and do not spend any more money until you are profitable. Reinvest your profits. Once you are profitable and have a repeatable strategy then you can leverage your capital to double triple quadruple down on your strategy / approach.

Access to capital could be an investor's differentiator, in fact, access to capital can be a fantastic differentiator (especially because it gives you the opportunity to pick up great domains at discount prices from distressed investors) but first you need to be able to identify the right opportunities.

Almost every new domain name investor fails because they think far too much about buying domains and not enough about selling domains. You could easily spend $10,000 or $100,000 or even $1,000,000 on domains in a day and never make a single sale. If you can't make money starting out with $1,000 then you will not make money starting out with $10,000 or $100,000 or even $1,000,000.

I'm looking to get back into the domain industry again.
1) If you were profitable before, why did you quit?
2) If you were NOT profitable, how can you expect to make money this time?

As @VadimK was saying, totally depends on you. Depends what is your background and what you know. A starting test could be to go to expireddonains.net and check the pending delete domains and try to guess which one is valuable or not and try to think why is valuable, before they drop or somebody bids on them. By checking later at what price was auctioned or list them here and a few of the pros can tell you if they are valuable or not, you can have an idea if you could be good at it or not. This will not answer your question 100% , but at least it will give you an idea.

Hi

when you divulge more than necessary, you are more likely to lose money

now, tell us how much you inherited

imo…

If you want to start this business, I would like to give you two suggestions:
1) Do not purchase .com domains. It is the largest and most requested market, but also the most competitive: the probability to build a portfolio overpaying it is high.
2) Do not purchase any domain whose renewal cost exceed $40

I am going to inherit total around $100,000 when all is said and done.

I am not sure I fully understood your point about avoiding .com. Could you elaborate a bit?
