I'm interested in purchasing a domain name from someone who I contacted through whois. They say they may sell but have not suggested a price yet.

What should I realistically expect to pay??

Without giving away the name:

It is a person's name (ie not generic or product related)
It has 19,500 with extension on Overture
Alexa of 1,030,000
Archive.org shows no matches.

I'd like to know what people think about the anomolies in OVT and Alexa? I think this is because this is a 'new' person to come on the scene so does this make sense?

How much would a name sell for with OVT with that much?
Sorry to be vague . .

Thanks,

Charlie

Did you check Wordtracker to see if the stats correlate? Sometime the two don't jive, and that's a give away.
My curiousity is piqued, so I'm going to try something- I'll get back.

Thanks Grrilla - I'm intrigued.

Tried wordtracker and got 38 with extension.

As a comparison earthlink.com gets 501 which is about 13 times as much. But OVT with ext for earthlink.com is 65,000 which is 3 times as much.

Not really sure what wordtracker offers me?
and still confused as to how reliable the OVT score is for the name. If anyone can think of a way of checking the traffic please let me know! Otherwise I think I'll hold off on the name for the time being?! :)

Go here to get a side by side comparison. WT is /da.

From what you are describing, OV is off and should not be trusted. Oh, wait I was thinking that Earthlink= 501 and OV was 65M. Hmm. Still, something feels whacky. Additionally, as a general rule, it is not a good idea to give OV results too much weight in the equation, regardless of accuracy, except w/ no brainer keywords.

Had to go out and didn't get a chance to complete my little experiment, but will get to it, promise.

Update on this thread.

I offered the owner $5k for the name and they were keen but then refused to use escrow as 'it would take too long' and we should do it on trust.

So then I replied that I simply couldn't risk that amout of money with no protection.
The next day I contacted them as offered to broker the name for them as I'd just heard of people who would pay 5 or 6 figures for the name.

They told me that at first I appear to be a private buyer and now come out as a broker - and ended all contact with me!!

Oh Well.
Latest Overture shows 20,000+ WITH extension
Wordtracker shows 35 a day.

What should I be feeling? Glad that I didn't risk losing my cash? or Destraught that I could have resold for loads?

Flip a coin and move on and scout out another deal.

I did a deal on trust for $1500 and it worked out, but I had been in correspondence w/ the buyer for a couple of mos and felt secure w/ who I was dealing with. From what you have said, the party that you were dealing w/ does not exude alot of confidence, so I'm reasonably sure that you made the right move, so probably no need for a coin toss, afterall. This also casts some suspicion on their legitimacy, (or they are suspicious old timers who are just set in their ways):

On the flip side, the approach you used may have backfired, and injured your credibility. One day they getting a stright up, $5k offer, the next they are hearing that the name is worth $xx,xxx-$xxx,xxx and that instead of buying it out right, you will broker it for them. The broker offer should have come before the cash offer, IMHO.

I find it odd when you say the domain has no history on archive.org yet it has a huge OVT score and very good alexa. I would love to know the guys marketing stratedgy if he has done all this in 8 months.

as others have said a name with that kind of score is instant mass traffic worth a small fortune.

What price would you pay without even thinking twice for a name with OVT with ext of 19,500?

mid to high 5 figures...maybe more if the name is associated with a product/market

Can't say the name I'm afraid - just in case.
Thanks for the replies though - I agree with them all I think. COuld have struck it rich but I just can't risk $5k

When I knew this, my only option was to offer to broker the name?!

I'll post the name one day!!!

It's much easier to be a spectator, after the fact, and make the calls, than to be in the thick of it when the money is on the line. I didn't mean to be critical in my above post. I think you played it well and made the right choice, and who knows? The owner might have second thoughts about taking a pass and you might be back at this thread telling us about it. :tu: :D

UPDATE:

Overture WITH extension is:
7,259.

Dropped massively so maybe missing out was a good thing - although it's still a sizeable figure!!

Think of the income through selling ringtones and ads etc (he's in the music industry)
