Can someone please explain snapping up expired domains? i.e. the steps of getting a listing domains that expire, getting them as they expire.

Can this be done without paying the big fee to a registrar ?

I've read that now that all these big companies are involved and most registrars know the domaining business, any expiring domain worth anything is going to be checked out/filtered through/picked up by these guys. If they don't like it, then they chuck it.

So, it seems that, most of the time, you'll have to go through those drop catchers or back ordering systems.

drop catchers --- what is that?

drop catchers are companies such as http://snapnames.com and http://enom.com (club drop) If you are a member, you have access to dropping domain lists. You can then place a backorder for a domain that you like, and if your amount is successful, you will win the name.

Another one

Pool.com is another one. This, SnapDomain, and Club Drop each have different ways to get your money :) . One, for example, lets you state a buying price... but if there are other people who also wanted that domain it instantly turns into an auction.
