Can .org be used for commercial sites??

I saw the script and it looked great to me
Till date I always assumed that anything to append to php like
phpbb, phpchat, phpmyadmin etc are free scripts and since this
site has a .ORG extension they shouldn't be charging any money
What do you all have to say?

Yes .org domains can actually be used for anything you want including commercial sites.

True. There was an attempt way back when to implement .org's as strictly for non-profits, presumably cancelling .org domains that didn't qualify. But that resulted in a semi-rebellion ('Hands off my .org' campaign), and the registry backed off. Its probably too late now to re-attempt the implemention.

I come across quite a few commercial sites with .org domain names these days. For example, there are a few forum skin sites (or at least there were) with .org domains that charge.

The question is, will people buy from domain with .org? This thread proofs that some people (probably many people) will have some doubts buying from domain with .org. It mean you will loose many potential customers.

I've purchased many an item from different orgs....no problem....my preference in buying domains has always been org and will continue to be....here's a fine example of a commercial org,and in this instance the org is certainly appropriate......http://www.clamormagazine.org/

actually .org does not mean it must be an organisation it was just created to appeal and specialize in organizations

i have always been against .orgs for commercial sites. its not what they were meant for.
