Hi,

I have been pondering this question for a little while and have finally come forward to find some answers. I am wondering whether or not people who are new to the domain market, with limited amount of money, still become large money earners? Being a new comer myself, I am finding it hard to buy and sell domain names as I have limited funds. Can us new comers (with limited funds) still make some money into todays fluctuating market?

Regards
Ben

yes invest in emerging trends like .tv and .in(for india)... alot of the good .in's are taken however you can still get premium names at a bargain compared to what they may cost in a few years. You can also invest in the upcoming .eu domains once it becomes available to the masses(only European Union residents can register them)

I agree with the above :)

If you have limited funds then future speculation would be your best bet imo.
Read about new technology for example, webtv or maybe alittle space travel :hehe:

Things are always changing and maybe you could own the name to the next big ipod :hehe:

Definetly.I didn't truly start domaining until early 2004 and I'm now earning $X,XXX per month in parking and making some end-user sales every once in awhile too.
Standard .com's are more or less exhausted,so like said above,I moved into co.in,.tv..
I make almost all of my money with IDN's though. (i.e.Gamzeร–zรงelik.com -domains with foreign characters).
Just get on Overture and see what people are typing and reg away. The Overture Tool is essentially free money if you learn to use it. $$$

Yes. I have bought around 3 domains for every one that I've sold in the past 6 months and am breaking even. Once I stop buying domains I'll start making a profit. I didn't trade short domains until June this year. I like to sell cheap. Others like to sell at higher prices. There are ways of making money either way.

The internet is still growing at a considerably faster rate than the average business and internet services are getting cheaper and cheaper. The one thing that is not getting cheaper is good names.

International Domain Names. Also you can earn some small money online without a website, and use that money to invest in the domains. Thats how I started off.

I doubt you can make millions but you can certainly make enough to justify the cost and leave a little for yourself

You dont need much funds at all, you can buy domains from investors for just a few cents. All you need if one click to pay for the entire domain. You have to keep your eyes open though to catch these domains.

How would you buy them for just a few cents? I mean the reg fee is still $8.88 which means that if they sell it for less than that (gathering they registered it) they would be losing money

Here are a couple rules of thumb for a bystander with limited funds who wants to become a domainer.

1) Only buy dot coms

2) Look for domains comprised of two words (one word dot coms are all taken and three word dot coms are too plentiful)

3) Avoid names that infringe upon trademarks.

4) Rely on news sources and information outlets to provide you with new products, services, ideas, technologies, etc... When you hear about something new, register the domain!

5) Remember that there are large, rich domain aggregators using sophisticated technology to register domains and you must compete with them. Try to pick up stuff that lies under their radar.

--

Words of advice:

Save up a couple thousand dollars and buy a really good two word dot com from a domain speculator that was registered a couple years ago. Some two word noun that is used in every day language. Then, develop it into the best site in that specific industry. It seems to me that many web businesses underestimate the power of a name. If you get a better name than your competition, make a better looking site than them, and promote it properly, you should do well even though you entered the arena after them. If you start with the best name possible for a specific industry, then you will create a viable barrier to entry for possible future competition.

Sorry but I do not agree :)

I have not been around long and have seen some very VERY nice sales in other ext.

I own over 100 .infos all of which (imo) in time, will see nice sales.

I do agree that the .com is the daddy and will be for many more years to come but think many other ext now are seeing nice sales

I agree too, I think some extensions like .de are worth looking at and even .info is good buy since so cheap

hope is dieing last. so yes i still hope that newbies still can make money. For sure it won't be something like one word com sales, but with a little creativity any domain can become a good one.

Neither do I. In fact if you have limited funds I would say you would be much better off buying good keywords or high quality 3-letter acronyms in .info, .biz and .us. Sales prices are rising very rapidly (the last quarter saw a major breakout for the new extensions). The cost of entry is low and the % ROI may well prove to be higher than anything else out there. The .com competition was already too expensive when I entered the field in 2002, so I followed the strategy noted above and it has paid off very handsomely and the returns increase every single month. I would follow the exact same strategy if I were entering the market with limited funds again today.

The problem with saving up all of your money to buy a single domain is that a buyer may never come forward for that one domain and if you develop it there's is no gaurantee your developed site will be successful. You can spread your risk by putting the same amount of money in multiple excellent keywords in other extensions giving you many more sales opportunities. "Don't put all of your eggs in one basket" became a wise and often repeated saying for good reason.

I agree with both mellow and Duke and they know the industry far better than I do. The money out there that is reachable by the average person is in markets other than the .com market. The simple fact is the majority of the good names are taken and that is certainly not the case. Just last night, for instance, I registered some .info domains related to history with fair overture. Do you think their .com's were available? Absolutely not.

I've learned my lesson and I've swtiched my focus away from the .com market.

Check the NP$ forum, people buy domains in auctions for like 20np$ all the time (which is around $0.36).
