What are the registry restrictions on registering a .ca different to registering a .com?

From what I understand - anyone living in or doing business in Canada can register a .ca domain name.

You would be best to check with CIRA for that. I live in Canada, so no issues from my end, but I see how that can affect value.

If these were .com then congratulations, you made a comfortable retirement fund.
Fact is that the population of Canada is 37 million and almost nobody outside Canada uses .ca.
So your audience is basically just Canada.
No US, German, Indian, British, Chinese; Australian or Russian firm with any common sense would use .ca.
That drastically reduces values, but not all the way down.
WholesaleDiamonds/ca is the only niche that I know about and that domain has value.
Suggest a Google.ca search for "wholesale diamonds". Find which companies in Canada are selling wholesale diamonds. Do they own a convoluted version of this domain? If so, you have a green light and why not start at $5,000 CAD?

The requirements to register a dot CA are:

Individuals
  • Canadian citizen

  • Permanent resident

  • Legal representative

  • Aboriginal peoples
Non-individuals
  • Corporation

  • Trademark registered in Canada

  • Association

  • Educational institution

  • Hospital

  • Government

So yah, essentially you need to be a resident of some legal degree or a legal entity in Canada.
