Buying a name thats already taken

How's it going I'm making a new website and the name that I would like to use is already taken but theres no website at that address so I figured who ever owns it would probaly sell it. I've got no idea how to go about trying to buy a domain thats already owned theres an email at godaddy but how do you go about it just email him up and make an offer, I also have no idea whats its worth either so whats the propper way to go about this.

Send them an e-mail. Ask if the domain is for sale.

Go to whois.sc or if its at godaddy go to whois.godaddy.com

Type in the domain name, then the information of the owner will be available, assuming of course they do not have privacy.

Check Expiration date on the domain as well, make sure its not comming up for expiration, if it is, just hold off and place a backorder, if not... I would recommend placing a phone call if its North America and asking if the domain name is for sale. I would also suggest speaking to a few NPers specifically about the domain name. (DO NOT POST IT IN THIS FORUM FOR YOUR OWN SAKE). See what they believe the value is and what an appropriate price point would be.

Obviously if you want the domain name sex.com its not going to happen. But if the domain is workable - and the owner is not using it, often times there is the option to buy.

If it is expiring soon, don't bother emailing just yet, wait and see if it drops, maybe backorder it if it is a good domain.

Thanks fellas its expiring may 2007 so waitings not an option and its not for sale on sedo so I guess I'll send an email looking at some of the prices on sedo maybe this name is way out of my budget the most I'll pay for it is $200 any more and its just not worth it to me. I won't mention the actual name buts gambling related but its LLLLLLandLLLLL.com I guess I'll send an email to the owner just him if its for sale.

I emailed him about it, its for sale but out of my price range. The domain was SportsandPoker.com what would this be worth.

The .org .info .biz and .us are still available to register. One of those may be suitable for your plans.
It also shows that the .com probably isn't worth too much undeveloped. Maybe you can negotiate to get the price in your range.

Ya I was thinking about dot somethng else but I think I'd rather have a different .com and he's actually developing a sportsboook and pokerroom and casino hes put a lot of work into it his price is up around $50,000 so I'm only about $49,800 short lol so I'll keep looking for another name that I like and thanks fellas for your advice and stuff.
