Buying a domain name not for sale?

How would you go about asking to purchase a domain name that was registered, however, the owner had not listed it for sale? Basically, I would like to send an e-mail offering to buy the domain name, without it coming off like spam.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

List your interest in the name and ask if they are selling along with their asking price. Include your email (preferrable not a gmail, hotmail, or yahoo) and your telephone #.

I would not offer any money in your first letter/email because it may tip off the person that their domain is worth much more than that. Just ask what their asking price is. You will get everything from $50 to $1,000,000 million (I've had those two responses and many in between, but the must frustrating is--"not willing to sell")

*gulp*

I have sent an e-mail from your suggestion and I will update this if / when I receive a response. Thanks for the quick replies!

Thank you. The name is currently inactive, but appeared to be redirected to a website that is now offline. It expires in 2 months, so I'm hoping the owner will simply want to recoup his registration fees. %%-

How long would you give the owner to respond to an e-mail? Would you send an e-mail again if you hadn't heard from him for a while?

Thanks for the help! :tu:

Many owners of quality domains will use this (or a similar) response when replying to unsolicted email inquiries. It's a fast and easy way to weed out nuissance offers. Most owners are willing to sell for the right price, even if they initially say the domain is not for sale.

I would wait a week. Then, try giving the phone number a call. At last resort, you can always send a snail mail inquiry if the first two methods (email and calling) don't work.
