According to an article on DomainNews, the owner of the domain name Milk.com is looking at $10 million for the domain name.
I do agree that it is a premium domain name and is very valuable, but then, the question is whether it is worth $10 million?
Here is what the owner has to say:

"People occasionally email me about buying the domain milk.com from me. I used to respond to such requests with, "How much are you OFFERING?" These days, if you don't mention a number, I probably won't mail you back. However, let me warn you that I like the name and I have a reasonably well-paying job, so it'll have to be a pretty damn good offer. Note that a number (in whole U.S. dollars) which includes fewer than 8 significant digits to the left of the decimal point does not constitute "pretty damn good" in my book. That is, if you're not OFFERING $10 MILLION, I'm not interested."

Would you buy a dairy farm with a consistent cash flow or go for Milk.com domain name for $10 million?

I would buy a business with $10 million. Just saying...

It's maybe worth a tenth of the owners ask. That's on its best day too.

You could spend $100k on an uber premium and spend the other $999,000 building your business.

$1,000,000 - $100,000 =/= $999,000

:P

Old joke. Whats the difference between a dairy farmer and a convict?

The convict doesn't have to milk the cows.

Basically he's waiting for one or two very specific buyers to come a long and want the name (milk producers/marketers.) Perhaps a long shot, but it could happen. MilkPEP announced they're spending $50 million on their newest marketing campaign, MilkLife.

The GotMilk campaign ran 20 years, and while I don't know the figures, they probably spend hundreds of millions on it during that time.

Ten million dollars?
I would not be into domaining at all.
I would not be on namepros at all.
Heck, I would not be on the internet at all!
Wife and I would damn well enjoy life and then some!

NO wonder I did not hear back from my offer of $9 since he was not using it and all!

You really have to admire somebody who has held a domain like that for so many years. I wonder what the highest actual offer he has received was.

If I were a major milk producer, yes. It only adds to the overall valuation of the company when developed.

So even if Milk.com is only worth $1mil, developed it's valuation could reach $500mil; from the acquisition of user information and marketing of products to millions of users.

Plus, if a advertisement only needs to be 10 seconds long with Milk.com at the end, it cuts down on their overall ad spend; which I'm sure makes $10mil look like cow feed.

*I used to work at a company that managed the budgets of other companies that spent money on magazine / journal advertising. The budgets these large companies have to run 6 month print ads alone is staggering.

The domain could pay for itself in a matter of months.

I must buy this domain and let people download milk from it :P :P

If I have to invest $10M, I would invest in some other business. I can buy a lot more domains with that money, but the fact is that I don't have money, even $100K. lol

What's the profit margin on milk ?
It takes up a lot of shelf space. A pack of Parmalat costs $1.97 at Target.

I would rather own vodka.com or pizza.com.

I can understand the bravado associated with owing a very premium domain name such as this, however I do wonder what the sales conversion rate is when owners have a publicly poor attitude.

He could have easily said 100 other things that wouldn't have made him sound like a horses rear.

The same thing with the owners of Nets [d0t] com, where they constantly taunt the New Jersey Nets organization with their domain.

Someone in the Milk industry might purposefully avoid the domain name, so to not benefit him specifically.

Sadly, it appears that the owner has not been able to milk his own domain so far.
