Buy variants to protect domain? Or...

Hi,

Wondering if when you have good domain ideas people buy the best variations of the name to protect the domain, or do you just buy which one you feel is the best and let the site/development/branding secure the name. Any advice or thoughts would be much appreciated.

if i am going to develop domain into something big, it is good idea to register most common variants and to redirect them into the main site.
I would buy plural and singular version
i would buy also wwwkeyword version just not too loose traffic from most comon mistake.

a bit different from what I am gathering, I register a good name and let the end user decide if they should register variations? Does selling a set of variations usually result in a higher sales figure and produce more bids, faster sales? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks for answering my first question.
