Hi all 👋 @MarkedMarket suggested I do a deeper dive on the domains used by ProductHunt launches now I have 3 months of data to analyse so here's a report on said data for Q3 2025. Number of domains analysed is 14,855.

TLD Analysis
How dominant is .com?

output (4).png

.com = 7,557 of 14,855 total → 50.87% share.

Everything else combined is 49.13% (7,298). So .com is just over half of all TLDs.

Which other TLDs are preferred (top non-.com)?

.ai 1,365 (~9.2%)

.app 1,038 (~7.0%)

.io 721 (~4.9%)

.net 328 (~2.2%)

.co 319 (~2.1%)

Notable next tier: .org 317 (~2.1%), .dev 298 (~2.0%), .me 188 (~1.3%), .xyz 171 (~1.2%).

Relatively well-known TLDs that are almost absent (using a practical cutoff of ≤10 occurrences):

.biz 7

.au 8

.uk 11 (just above the line; still very low)

Also very sparse (but >10): .us: 26, .de: 37, .info: 41.

****Full count of all 274 TLDs here****

Key Takeaways
  • .com accounts for over half of all projects
  • Most ngTLDs are likely hand registered for the project
  • Domain length doesn't vary wildly between TLDs, 8-11 characters across all, with the shortest being in .ai .io. in .dev .co .me .space .live
  • The age of the .coms suggests they are projects from more established business or new businesses with aftermarket purchases.

Thanks so much for this information! Really helpful to have, and nice to have the summary of key points at the end.

Somewhat surprised to see .net edge out .co, although close.

The age data is interesting, although I guess no way to differentiate someone who bought an already aged domain name from someone who had the name and idea for the project for a long time. Like you say in summary, I suspect most of the names are hand registrations.

Seeing the length as a function of TLD is really fascinating. I would have guessed that the .com would be longer, but they are all pretty consistent.

Have the launches that are on Apple App store or Google Play subtracted from these statistics? If not, is that not a huge part of the .com?

Thanks so much for all of the work that went into this, and your daily post, Leanne.

I don't know how to quote on here but the app store stuff is all bundled in so you're right, that will be skewing things a little.
