"At as much as 2.50 dollars per liter (10 dollars per gallon), bottled water costs more than gasoline," the study says.

Although in the industrial world bottled water is often no healthier than tap water, it can end up costing 10,000 times more.

Bottled water consumption, which has more than doubled globally in the last six years, is a natural resource that is heavily taxing the world's ecosystem, according to a new US study.

"Even in areas where tap water is safe to drink, demand for bottled water is increasing, producing unnecessary garbage and consuming vast quantities of energy," according to Emily Arnold, author of the study published by the Earth Policy Institute, a Washington-based environmental group.

being honest, the first time i saw bottled water for sale i was like Whaaaaaaaaa. The reason being.I was raised on well water until i was 6 years old,So seeing tap water was a big deal,Then seeing bottled water selling for a buck fifty,I didn't know what to think of it all.Today it is just like a bottle of soda at your local stores.I use a brita water filtering system today. Not that i have to,It 's just our water here comes from a very small lake, and just doesn't taste well,Has a strong stinch of chlorine-lol.But i have yet to purchase a bottle of water. What started as ...ummm...i'll say a trend.Has become a billion dollar industry.Totally incredable.I guess iam just a little bit old to be able to relate to buying a 20oz bottle of water for $1.50

You and me both.. not to mention, much of the bottled water being sold is no better than your tap water.. what a scam!

I'm more concerned with the environmental and economic impact.. and now that it's become such a big industry, how do you stop it?

Right, I don't agree with the "fact" that bottled water is no better than tap water.

We only drink bottled water for two reasons:

1. Since drinking bottled water I can taste the chlorine put in the tap water to sterilise it.
2. If I can taste the chemicals which they put in the water, it's not good for you!

Well you should check out the insanity in Venezuela.

1 Litre of Bottled Water - bs.1,500 (80 cents)

1 litre of beer - bs. 1,000 (52 cents)

1 litre of cheap imported Scotch Whisky bs. 4,500 ($2.40)

1 litre of good rum - bs. 3,500 ($3.00)

1 litre of Gasoline - bs. 83!!!! (about 3.5 cents!!!!)

So if you can't afford to fill up your Hummer, come to Venezuela but bring your own water.

I was thinking the same thing,I think it has gone further than a fad to see people walking around with a bottle of water,Younger generations don't know anything different than to buy bottled water.I agree,A scam! Read on the bottle,It is not natural spring water,Well most of it isn't.It's simply filtered water, and who really knows that all brands are even filtered? Now they have it flavored, Starwberry and ect,Are those preservitives good for people? I think it's an industry way out of hand.

Not to mention now engery drinks are the big fad,But that's a different topic i think.

Then i wonder how my great grandma and grandpa lived to be a 100 years old just taking a one a day vitamin

I read recently that Coca Cola had to take all it's bottles of water off the shelves in England because it was just filtered tap water.

Funny though cuz the Coca Cola water tastes better than all the other brands. (maybe they put some Coca in it.) :)

Maybe that's how it is in the USA. But in the UK and most of Europe about 80% of it is spring water.

There are a few that read to be natural spring water,One brand even says it comes beneath a volcano.I guess you just have to read the fine print on each brand,I have looked at em in the grocery store, and alot say,Filtered water.Atleast here in the US.

Me personally though,DOMiNIC above shows a litre of beer to be .52 ,I'll have 3 litres of beer and large order of nachos

Along the lines of bottled water is bagged soil. The two most abundant things on the planet.I would never pay for either. If anything I spend a lot of time keeping the stuff out of my house by sealing cracks etc.If I need either I just step outside and there is plenty of both free.
I also do not worry about the impurities as they are generally common to our diet anyway and mostly essential.Spring water is full of minerals andd I get more chlorine swimming at the swimming pool or eating salted popcorn.
I attribute my extremely good health and lack of allergies to old fashioned diets which included mud pies from the garden in my early years.
In my mind any attempt to package and sell air water or soil is taking advantage of
of our sheltering fears of natural and common ingredients and chemicals.
The body has an amazing way of handling, utilizing and disposing of things
that we digest.
My feelings anyway.

I was watching today on BBC a program about the environment and in studies with Inuit people they found high traces of PCB's and DDT because the wind has carried these chemicals across the world and it has remained stored in the fat of seals and caribou for decades, then passed into the food chain.

I guess this means there is no such thing as 'Pure Water' left on planet earth!!! :(

Maybe that's why Nasa is spending so much money searching for 'Water on Mars.' :$:

If anybody wants to do something about our planet (except destroy it), I will sell EnvironmentAction.com for a fair price on the condition that it is developed seriously.

lol, people worry about the tap water but pollute the living crap out of the world with all the plastic bottles.
It's funny seeing some meatball driving down the road in a hybrid car drinking water from a plastic bottle.

people don't by hybrids for the earth, they do it for themsleves, to save $$$

running cars on water for mear pennies has been acomplished about 3 times over the past 30 years yet once the concept is proven they usually burn the documents because they're afraid what might happen if converting water to gas (air) was done on a large scale such as everyones car, airplane, train, etc... I personally have schematics of a complete "water" car but I can almost gurantee as long as governments are profiting off of enegry resrouces they will never let a clean h20 car be sold commerically. Its all about the money, always has been.

Do you think American dependance on the car, in particular SUVs, is related to the crime rate and fear?

Public transport as well?

I mean you have less chance of getting robbed or shot in a Hummer than on a bicycle.

Personally I think thats backwards, one who has a hummer will have more $ than a bicycle rider, not sure how criminals would see it though.
