Sedo and Ebay are advertising venues first and foremost ... to the best of my knowledge, they are NOT auction houses, NOT licensed auctioneers, NOT licensed brokers, NOT escrow agents, etc...

Bottom line is that one counts their lucky stars when Sedo, Ebay, etc work as one expects for large dollar transactions, but often it seems that the exception not the rule ... fake sales, canceled transactions, shill bidders, etc is about par for the course for those places.

There's definitely a window of opportunity for sales venues that can innovate to the next level ... ie. verification of listings, along with buyers and sellers, more intuitive interface, etc ... Snapnames and some other drop auction sites are well positioned to dominate the auction space if they play things right.

If someone is a nice guy they could win the auction just to ensure someone doesn't get taken here.

Not advisable I did that for yee.com which was a fake auction. Figured I would save someone some grief. I won refused to pay of course and the Seller gave me horrible feedback. Ebay would not remove it. They refused to. I tried to get them to remove the listing before I bid and they did not

The listing is this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180128804478
I am bootdisksrus, take at look at the feedback I got.

"Fraudulent Payment by PayPal for Domain Name / Unauthorized Funds"
"Look! All his feedback is over 60 days old; is account stolen? He sent stolen $$"

The problem with these scams is that it makes even the legitimate sellers without feedback look suspicious.
I listed a name once on eBay (I have a seller rating of just 1...never used eBay much. I'd rather use Craigslist) and got enquiries if I was legitimate or not. Nobody eventually bid (well, except one) on that domain because of that.

I think eBay is getting paid no matter what the outcome of the auction. If something sells on eBay, they get commission from the sales. Its either the seller or the buyer will lose money and eBay is the only winner that comes out if it. "I think" that they also made the auction private once the auction price go above $100 so that it would be harder for anyone track any fraud. In addition it would also be hard to determine if someone is inflating the bid since you can't really see who is actually bidding in the last minute of the auction.

Wow! Closed at $300,000 - it will be interesting to see if the winning bidder did it just to keep anyone else from winning, as I see was suggested.

$300k is cheap for a LL.com especially one with decent letters such as BO.com. Its definatley seemed fake to me even though the seller had the right registered location domaindiscover and expirary date because a name like that would sell better on sedo for example.

Example - LI.com sold on sedo.com $500k on the 22nd August 2007

I wonder if EBAY could use a domain verification system like sedo to help eliminate the fake auctions. It might not help their sales, but it would give them some credibility where domains are concerned.

I doubt he will really loose these names since it is discovered earlier unless the
sex.com's stolen story.
