I've got a $1,000 renewal month coming up (mostly godaddy) and was wondering who knows of any .mobi transfer deals?

I don't know of any special transfer deals, but EuroDNS have a 5 euro promo through the month of July. Second place comes Moniker with $8.19.

If your names are landrush it's possible some special renewal offers will come out in September. At least that's what I hope because otherwise a hell of alot of .mobi's are going to drop...

And we might not see any until winter, the assumption being that most landrush and early regs will be renewed anyway...

That would be a foolish assumption on the part of the registrars and registry. There is a lot of economic pressure on people these days. When the renewal cost is a lot higher than the initial cost the temptation is to fold 'em. I have dumped coms and other extensions that I was planning to keep in the last few weeks. Some mobis will probably follow - to be replaced, perhaps, with fresh, better regs from my fellow domainer's drops.

That has become my strategy, cover new regs to some extent by dropping lower quality domains. If I can get my replacements cheaper than renewals then so much the better.

Whiz.in - and I imagine the other Directi resellers - still have $6.30 new regs, but renewals are about twice that. Godaddy has moved from $7.99 to $9.99, I have not checked to see if transfers are also $9.99. Hard to imagine Parsons will not make a bid for the .Mobi renewals.

Everyone knows the renewals are coming. Quite possibly tens or hundreds of thousands of .Mobi domains will transfer to the (secure) registrar with the best price. Maybe we will see a price war.

That's not the way it tends to work out. A lot of the landrush junk that could not be flipped quickly (and it has been two years aleady) will be dropped. The Junk Dump will probably take about 10% of .mobi registrations if other TLDs are anything to go by. The early regs, especially the brand and trademark registrations will probably be auto-renewed.

Some of the bargain basement resellers will find that there are less special offers available from some of the larger registrars who have been involved in domain tasting.

Regards...jmcc

You're right scandiman alot that were registered are not even appropriate for

marketing on the small cell screen. :]

What does the size of the screen have to do with it? If marketed
correctly, anything can be appropriate. It's all what you make it!

As for renewals, I just renewed for $12.99 at godaddy. They had
$10.22 renewals a month or so ago and I hope they bring them back
quickly :]

A lot of the names I wouldn't want to own in any extension.

That was my point precisely. The junk will drop no matter how much the renewal price is lowered and the good names and trademarks will be renewed even if the pricing remains as is.

Between, I think the Junk Dump will be way over 10%...

I fear most registrars regard the future of .mobi as uncertain and might try to milk the extension while they still can. If there is some money for everyone, nobody might want to start a price war...

Under the circumstances it looks possible that pricing will remain as is, and it will be services and each domainer's personal preference that will decide where the portfolios will be transfered at renewal time.

Edit:

accentnepal and jmcc, I repped you both for your comments and optimism. I sincerely hope you're right!

Perhaps threads like this one are the best way to encourage a price war.

Hey Mr Registrar! - - - We got tens of thousands of .Mobis here to renew. - - - Ya want the business?

That will get 'em. Nothing like the profit motive.

I would imagine it makes the best sense to commence discounting right before the end of sept. So that people pay full price for all the names they plan to keep, and at the last moment when only the drops are left unrenewed, then drop the price to encourage renewal of some of the proposed drops. That seems like the best strategy for any registrar.
