Type in a zip code dot us and you will see that Neustar has found a significant partner to develop a local search directory.

This kind of partnership was hinted at in a few posts earlier this year based on information contained in the last contract Neustar signed with the US Department of Commerce to continue operating the dot us registry. Neustar was to find partners to develop out some reserved domains to build the usefulness and popularity of the dot us name space. Only dot us domains will be listed in the directory of services which could open the eyes of small business and others to registering dot us domains or finding them in the aftermarket.

Hopefully some kind of advertising or marketing budget will go along with it. Something like this could be the tipping point for the dot us name space.

The simplicity of it is brilliant. It is designed to both inform the general public through locally based search and to encourage more domain registration. Very easy to market to the masses "just check your zip code dot us". And they own every zip code dot us so it will be complete coverage. A directory of that size will also rise in search quickly.

Something is off...the site says you have to have a .us to register a site, but click on any of the directory links and the ads are .coms

If an advertiser wants to advertise, they too should have the .us.

Any ideas on when they might announce their new product?

The first major step towards local search using .US as intended for the 60% of local US businesses that do NOT yet have a significant web presence. With .coms taken, what's their next best choice?

Of course Marchex has the .com zipcode portfolio, but they also have big holes in it where they don't own the names. This instead is a complete set. Remember, Neustar also manages the US phone # system, and has all the 800# series on reserve. This is more than a zipcode based affiliate advertising plan, it's a move to promote the .US extension directly to businesses by the US registry on orders by the DoC.

Like the smart money told us much earlier, .US is coming and it's gonna be huge!

.US is starting to take Zip Codes live

Seen this mentioned in another forum - and seeing I own some .com Zip Code Domains and am a fan of local portals .... I had to take a look.

They aren't Dev'd completely yet by any means .... but it does have a place to add Your .us domains in the Directory. My zipcode is www.28460.us - which has weather on it and little more so far But it's more than is on many I checked .... I noticed there is nothing on "90210" - which is about as popular as it gets on zips (mainly from the show and being in Beverly Hills).


Just thought it was cool that Neustar was finally doing something with these long time reserved domains :tu:

I don't see anything in there about marketing of this service. Also when I go to one of their sites, I don't see any regional specific businesses. Is this just because they are in the initial phase of their launch? Or is this because they have "technically" fulfilled their obligation?

Can we expect to see anything in the news about their new service's or how they plan on promoting it?

I think the idea is outstanding!
I am hoping that it will be promoted so that it will become as common as googling! :p If so I think the .US market will far surpass any other ext for the .US.

chicago is also taken 60606 but not in all extensions.

Oooh, that's gonna tick off Marchex, they own > 70% of all .COM and .NET zip codes and put out a big press release about myzip.com a few weeks ago.

Hmm, none of my local zip codes in .us go to anything other than a blank page.
