Better Search engine ranking?

Hi all,
I was talking to my financial planner and he knows I deal with domains/websites. He mentioned that his domain expired and re-registered with Net Sol for 20 years (said cost was $200).
He mentioned that 'More years on the domain registration equals better search rankings.'

-Now this might be something Net Sol mentioned to get more years out of him but is it true?

I've heard this before ... insofar as more years registered = better search rankings ... but I think excellent, relevant, helpful website development, and known, proper SEO techniques are of far more importance, in my experience. :gl:
Ask yourself; how does N.S. make money (registrations and renewals )? :blink:

Jeff is right, though having a domain online for more years is an indication of good intentions to develop it does not substitute great updated content, and above board SEO techniques like link building and fresh unique information. I do not believe time online is a major part of the google algorithm but I could be wrong.

Hi,

Let your accountant know that a domain can only be regged 10 years max going forward.

When you reg for more than 10 years, you are trusting that the Registrar will still be around to add the additional years.

Compare the expiration date at the Registrar
and then at the Registry and see if there is a difference.

I have a client who was contacted by a company promising to register his domain name for him for 10 years. He paid hundreds of GBP for this. When he asked me about acccessing the domains for him, it turned out that they were all available to register. I think the company regged them for just one year, and then let them drop. When he tried to contact the company about this, he found out the company no longer existed.

If your friend has registered the name for 20 years, which I soubt, run a whois on it and check the expiration date. I got a sneaky feeling the name is probably just registered for 12 months.

more years could play a part in seo, but a very small one at that. i'm not surprised that your financial planner has been mislead into thinking it plays a big role, seeing as s/he has a domain at netsol. :hehe:

That's not the first time I've heard that, but it's more of a selling technique than it is a viable way to get to the top.
