I used to use (:)) notepad some time ago, but now I'm using Scintilla - it has highlighting capabilities for a LOT of programming languages - just pick yours in the menu.

How do you set up Dreamweaver to display the php code correctly? Is there a way to do it locally without uploading the file? I'd like to work on some php stuff offline.

I also use EditPlus. Its a very fast program and the syntax highlighting is great. Makes a great notepad replacement.

1) If the extension is .php ot should handle it well

2) Yes in MX, you have Local View, Remote View and Testing view.

Hope it clears that up for you.

Cheers,

Matt

I guess I'll have to look at this some more, because when I looked at the "Design" view the php stuff wasn't showing up in Dreamweaver. I was using an include for the header, and it didn't show up. When I uploaded the file, everything was behaving fine. I would just like to find out how to "view" the rendered php page like you can do with regular html in the "design" section.

Design view won't show you interpreted php code in dreamweaver. Try code view.

You would have to set up a local server with PHP in order to see the interpreted php code when off-line.

Ber-Art you missed my favourite text editor ConText - highlighting for most programming languages

Care to tell me how to do this? Any websites you could point me to so I can set this up? Thanks!

Setting up a local server depends on your operating system and your preference.

The easy way (assuming that you are running Windows) is to go here
http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Software_and_Servers/Installation_Kits/index.html
select one of these packages that provides apache, php plus whatever other options appeal to you, download, install.

If you prefer a Windows server solution then you'll need IIS & then install PHP interpreter and configure IIS to work with it.

BUT, if you have to ask the question you would probably be better off using one of the PHP editors that have interpreters built in. I'm sure there are a few just don't remember which ones. Maybe someone else can recommend?

I use Zend at work but at home I use Winsyntax (probably because it was free and that mattered at the time I got used to it).
