When a company like Google has the power to get you to change your website address to facilitate a particular Google system, then that company has become too large and does not deserve your patronage.

Google is another company that uses YOUR PROPERTY to enrich themselves.

"Rather than going through a request process that can take several weeks, we decided to dump the domain..."

Yeah, that domain name must have been really stellar.

Matt of Bodis has said he has never ever seen a banned domain get a clean bill of health from Google. Now there may be special circumstances why that may be the case (like domainers being lazy). But I do find it slightly incredible that he has never, ever, once see a ban reversed, in his whole life. Or at least in his whole domaining experience. Which must be at least 10 years and seeing probably thousands of banned domains.

Donny of Voodoo isn't quite so specific, but thinks you have no hope of getting a ban reversed. Probably for the same reasons as Matt. Whatever that may be.

Even Google are saying there are some domains (how many? Could be a substantial number) which will never get their bans reversed.

So this is something to look out for when registering or buying domains for parking or development. I've been bitten enough times myself, that I check every name I buy these days before I purchase.

Stub, can I ask how you check every name before you buy or backorder? Do you use the method in the article and use wayback / archive.org records? Are there other ways we can check to avoid purchasing banned domains? Thanks.

If you google a name and it shows up in the search results, doesn't that mean it is ok?

Maybe these are domains that are very obvious as spammy, like say buyrolexnow dot biz or something like that.

I think that "sticky" google penalty on domains, is similar to Sedo when they are unable to tell if the domain in their system was already dropped or changed hands. For example, i once regged a dropped domain that i found out was still listed For Sale on Sedo for $15,000. I had to ask a Sedo agent to remove the listing since the domain was already dropped and i am now the new owner.

A lot of these stuffs are done by automated software. And the good thing is that there is some human whom you can talk to and ask for a manual review and fixing.

Maybe one improvement that Google can do, is setup a query system where you can check a domain to see if it's a bad egg.

Wayback Machine is limited. For example, i am blocking the wayback machine spider in all of my htaccess file for my 800+ domains. If you look at my domains in the Wayback Machine, they have blank info.

The easiest way is to use an Adsense Sandbox, enter the domain name and see if Google ads show up - or not. They usually work even for unregistered (or dropped) domains so you can check before buying. DP has one and here's a couple of others:
Check Google Adsense Sandbox
Google AdSense Sandbox - Preview Tool for Google Ads

Found the above at this forum.

Hi Jonathan, good write-up. I am sure most companies arenโ€™t aware that many domain names, even those that are currently available to register might have a history and can be previously used by companies that used black hat SEO techniques to promote their sites. The Wayback machine is a good way to determine how a site was used in the past, content wise but it wonโ€™t help you to identify if a site have used spam or shady SEo techniques to promote the content on that domain. So it can happen that the content is relatively normal/clean but the domain is still blacklisted by Google.

My advice is to check for back links to the domain you consider using/purchasing. No backlinks means youโ€™re 99% good to go because itโ€™s safe to assume no-one previously used the domain. If you do find some backlinks for the domain you can easily find out if the link are good or bad. Bad link are blog & comment spam, cloaking farm links or from adult sites for example.

A easy tool to check for backlinks is http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/ or https://www.majesticseo.com/

To check if I'm buying a Google banned domain I use a Voodoo.com utility. I cannot publish it because it is specific to each Voodoo Account and uses their API. But if you are a Voodoo.com user, Donny can supply you with a code to check if the domain is either Clean, Adult, or Faillisted.

If you are not a Voodoo.com user there is a link in the Bodis thread, but the NP Search isn't good enough to find it. So feel free to post it here if you find it.

I use archive.org too, but I basically rely on the link mentioned above.

Well google does not like sites with ads and no original content. So does parking a domain on Sedo lead to Google blacklisting the domain - despite them supplying the ads to the parking system?

Yep. Well not blacklisted per se. Google just don't include the domain in their index. But it isn't Faillisted.

But his main area of interest is parking.

It's like asking someone in a bar what he thinks the success rate is of Alcoholics Anonymous is with the people that drink at his establishment. I'm sure the average bar owner doesn't have many people come in and sit down and drink Shirley Temples.

That doesn't mean that banned sites can easily be brought back or anything - I've never looked into it too much :)

Anyhow, I think it's still incredulous that of the (probably) thousands of domains that he has requested reconsideration for removing the Faillisting, he hasn't seen even one succeed. But then I don't suppose he (or his customers) goes through the correct process for un-Faillisting a domain :)

Thanks for the heads up, perhaps a thread for unbanned names should be started โ€ฆ..share the good news

19 months ago I bought a domain only for parking purposes. It has good quality backlinks and it was performing nice making daily revenue. It was parked at Voodoo. Sudenly, one day the revenue stopped without reason and no correct ads were shown. I checked voodoo's settings and saw that it was "failisted". I contacted Donny explaining the case and told me that was Google who declared that domain failisted. But Donny was able to solve it and the domain was set to "clean" again and making the same revenue as before the issue.
I'm telling this because maybe it's possible that Google reconsiders to clean up a domain.
