Batwoman a Lesbian?

Just the other day, I read an article about the comic industry specifically slanting toward appealing toward the gay and lesbian segments of the populace.. now I see they've reintroduced the Batwoman character as a lesbian. see http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/books/06/02/batwoman.reax/index.html

What are your thoughts on this?

As for myself, I'm wondering how sexuality fits in the comic industry at all.. I'm not against gays.. I'm against labeling. (I think being gay is a biological phenomenon, not a "choice").

This is probably more about :$: dollars (for Time Warner), than sense ... IMHO. :|

Caveat: This is my at-first-blush reaction to the post ... will read the actual link, and further research the topic later this weekend. :gl:

I agree... my healthy dose of cynicism dictates that it's not about providing positive role models for young gays and lesbians as much as trying to tap the lucrative gay market share.

I don't even see it as that (trying to tap into the gay market)

It seems nowadays every movie and tv show has to have at least one character from different minorities. The token black person, gay person, short person, disabled person, transexual person, foreign person.... etc etc.

No matter how ludicrous it makes the plot, they still have to do because it's politically correct. That's how the world is so that's how they've gotta portray it. I don't even see it as gaining viewers from those areas.

For example, I like computers but I don't have any added interest in a movie that includes computers. I don't think because there's one black person in a TV show that that's gonna make more black people watch it.
IMHO the storyline is more important than having "one of my own" in a movie.

I think unless the movie or TV show is totally dedicated to that minority or includes them in a way that doesn't make them seem like they were crowbarred in for political correctness' sake, that isn't going to attract additional viewers from that minority.

I'm certain they do it just because it's politically correct and they don't want to offend anyone by excluding them.
In fact, I'd say they probably offend more people by putting "one of them" into a ludicrous position in a movie or TV show, where they obviously don't fit in or are just there so the movie/tv company can say "we acknowledge minorites" and "we don't exclude someone because of ........"

It's not just limited to one minority any more, they have to include as many as they can. The worst part is most of them are just included to make more sensational storylines.

That's my 2 cents anyway, that's how I see things. I'm not against any of those things, however I am against how they're currently being used.
I think everyone should respect each other no matter how "different" they are. IMHO the movies and TV shows don't respect that and just include them for the reasons listed above.

Hopefully one day, every minority will be respected and not exploited for political correctness/ratings/whatever other reason they're currently being used for.

Peace! :)

hey, its alright with me! :) *drools*

Seriously, I think that it is a bloody cheek. Batman and Batwoman have both been the two lovers. You can't now make batwoman a lesbian. Just think how lonely batman would be! No, you can't have her as a lesbian. It seems as though they are dropping tradition for sex. Its not right.
