I was eyeing this name some time ago but I forgot about it. I checked its whois and saw that it was renewed few days ago.

It's now owned by this company.

It's not a particularly good name or one anyone else here will want but I saw their email and that got me curious.

Does this mean the name has expired and is now in snapnames possession ready to be auctioned to the highest bidder?

Thank you. :)

Perhaps it dropped and they are tasting it. Maybe you can see it in the live auctions. So you can put a bid or wait until they release it.

SnapNames has several "domain companies" it uses to catch domains. Another one they have that I got a domain through is DomainSalsa.

PM sent. I also have a list of ICANN accredited registrar's listed on my blog. http://dotweekly.com/?p=14 in that post. They are on the list and when you go to the site, it's a Manage.snapnames.com site.

I'm sorry for bringing back a relatively old thread, but what if a domain I want is listed in their auctions but there haven't been any bids yet? Is it safe to assume that the domain will then be dropped by SnapNames who have listed it for sale? If it will be dropped, how lengthy is the wait before I can register it myself? :)

If I were you, I would have back ordered it in the last moment.

No one has placed any bids yet though. Why pay $XX for something I may be able to claim for registration fee?

Because you 'WANT IT' :) There is a blog in nambio.com by Spade that GoDaddy could snap a dropped name! What if someone else had backordered the name in some 'crappy' backordering site just as in Spade's case? How crappy it is, but it will snap the name as soon as Snapnames drop it again. At least before a human can fresh register it again.
Well if the name is not that important, you can just wait till it's dropped again.

Safer and easier way to get the name via their auction. After 24-72 hours, Snapnames will drop the name and tasters will immediately pick up the name usually.

After taster 1 drops it (if no traffic), either taster 2 will pick it up or perhaps taster 1 will drop and re-reg it for a 2nd round. This could take up to 2 weeks or more.

I'm not sure if the domain is worth the initial bid, even though it would certainly work well with my next project. I will wait out the auction process, and outbid anyone that attempts to make an offer. I'm confident the domain has minimal traffic, so the tasters (if any) will likely drop it as well. It is at this point that I will snatch the domain, and save enough change to pay for a few more drops in my gas tank. :)
