Today the new free newspaper "dag" is introduced in Holland. A crossmedial initiative with a great mobile portal (automatic detection) PCM and KPN are the backers of this project.
A new mobile initiative with no word spended on .mobi...

www.dag.nl

what he means is they created a website which automatically detects mobile devices and servers them with a mobile version of the main website. So basically they did not need a .mobi extension. This is what i would image 99% of already establish websites will do anyway.

But there is still scope for mobile only websites and for these .mobi would make sense.

I'm not sure even 50% of existing websites will be so proactive to do so, let alone 99%....vast vast majority of websites DO NOT belong to big corporations but individuals and small/medium sized businesses and I don't think they'd feel the need or necessarily have the means/knowhow to make sure their existing sites automatically resolve on mobile devices. But again, this is only one aspect of mobile limitation of existing sites...the second, and much more important, being the nature of the content on all these existing PC-based sites and their inapprotiateness for mobile usage...mobile sites need their own specific and special type of content; anyone who doesn't think so doesn't really understand the nature of mobile web usage.

Don't be blind. It's obviously posted as "good news" whenever a news organization decided to do a mobile initiative with .mobi. So it stands to reason it's bad news if a major news organization does a mobile initiative and totally dismisses mobi in the process.

Adaption rate and penetration are the measurements of success. Don't dismiss bad news because you don't like it.
