Backorders and Keep Quiet?

I am interested in placing a backorder on a domain. I've looked at SnapNames and it almost seems like if you place a backorder, it's an advertisement to the world that this domain is expiring soon, and at least one person is interested in spending $60 for it. Am I correct in thinking this is how SnapNames works?

Are there any backorder services that "keep quiet", that is, you place your backorder and if it's available great -- without anyone being the wiser? I am interested in a niche domain that hardly anyone would be interested in -- it just happens to be taken for the moment. But, if people see my interest in it, I am afraid it will spawn interest from others.

Any thoughts?

If the domain is in live auction then yes it's best to wait until the last minutes before you place a bid as it may draw attention to the name. The name could also be added to the most active auctions list, spurring further competition.
In all other cases just put your backorder and wait.

proxy bids?

It should be illegal for auction sites or resellers to advertise your interest in the domain and/or immediately display your maximum bid/offer for that domain. Needs to be cleaned up and run like ebay. Where if the auction starts at $70 then the bids increase from there. Not immediately go to your maximum amount and advertise it!! What happens if no one backorders the domain before its released? Does it just become available at the regular $10 price? Can you just register it then at any register. Murky world of domain renewals, needs to be fixed and cleaned up.
Cheers!
