Hello, I've read that if there is more than one backorder the domain goes to auction, but in that case if I lose the auction do I lose the backorder as well?

Some places take backorder @ no charge so you lose nothing.

Other places refund but require up front payment.

I don't know of any that do not give you a refund but that doesn't mean they don't exist. Sometimes it's a "store credit".

most of the time you only pay the fee when/if you win
