Backorder or Make Offer?

I found a nice domain name for a blog that expired a month ago but is still in Pending Renewal or Deletion status at godaddy. I'm confident that I could grab it with a backorder, but it's been reg'd since 2003 and of course I rather have it aged than a new reg.

My questions are:

1. How much more than the $15 backorder fee do you feel a 4 year old domain is worth.

2. How much do you think you would have to offer someone for them to even bother transfering it to you, as opposed to letting it expire?

3. Has anyone ever tried contacting someone for their expiring domain, only to have it backfire on them by letting them know that their domain might have value and they kept it?

Assume the domain has no real value other than its age and its fairly short.

If it's in redemption period the current owner is going to have to pay a fee for renewing it after it expiration date. I'd say $200-250.

I went through one of these, but I didn't want to pay the asking price of the seller to have it sent to me. I told him to just go ahead and let it delete. Domain was backordered, so I didn't get it. Didn't mind though ;).

Could you give us some more info about when it expired? GoDaddy has quite a few phases from expiration to deletion. If it's passed thru the tdnam auction phase, then your expecting GoDaddy to go up against the big dropcatchers, SnapNames, NameJet, and Pool, as well as all the tasters. Since your backorder at GD at that point is worth diddly squat, if anybody else sees value in the domain.
